FC: Kristin Lambert A Brief History
My name is Kristin Lambert. I am forty-years old. I will celebrate my fifth wedding anniversary on June first. I am the proud mother of three children, Joely, 4, Eva, 18 months, and Finnegan, 3 months (wheeew!). There is never a dull moment and I enjoy my family very much. As you can imagine, I do not have a great deal of free time. In my rare moments of free time, I like to read, exercise, work in my garden, and entertain. My husband and I like to entertain. He is an excellent cook. We also enjoy traveling but we have not had much opportunity to do so lately.
I graduated from Albion College with a B.A. in English and Psychology. I attended Wayne State University where I got my teaching degree. My first teaching position was at a charter school in Detroit. I left there and began teaching at Advantage Alternative Middle School in Hazel Park where I am currently teaching. Advantage facilitates students that have been expelled or have received a long-term suspension from their previous schools. We are a strict discipline academy and the Hazel Park school district sends the students with severe behavior problems to our program. I teach elementary and middle school Language Arts. I recently graduated from the University of Phoenix with a degree in Special Education.
Live well, laugh often, love much
I have had quite a bit of experience with struggling readers and writers. While I was going to school for my teaching certificate, I was an aide at an elementary school. I worked with the Title1 teacher and worked in small groups with the lowest readers in the first grade. I used guided reading with leveled readers to improve these students' reading ability. I learned a In my current position, I work with a highly at-risk population. we have students that come into our program that are reading at least two to three grade levels below where they should be. The students also are very poor writers. They have difficulty with writing a complete sentence.
____________________________________________________________ | In my current position, I teach at-risk students who have severe behavior problems. The students enter into our program with poor and inconsistent academic backgrounds. The students do not have a stable home life and get no support from home regarding their academics. Many students have been out of school for long periods at a time. The majority of our students are not functioning at grade level in reading and math. when I first began teaching at Advantage, the school had little to no resources for the teachers to use to help these students. The literacy problem is so prevalent that the school addressed it in its school improvement plan. Part of our plan involved creating an RTI program. We also offer after-school tutoring twice a week.
I am looking forward to this class because I want to learn specific strategies that will be effective with my students, I work with a range of grade levels from third grade to eighth grade. I want to learn effective methods of instruction that will work at different grade levels. I would also like to learn about the best assessments to use to determine a student's areas of need in literacy. I will be the nTitle 1 teaching consultant for my school next year and I want to use the information gained in this class to design an effective intervention program for my students. I would also like to learn about various research-based programs and which ones are the best. My school is considering purchasing a computer-based program such as Read Naturally and Successmaker. I would like to find out if any other schools that use these programs have seen them improve students' literacy skills.
