FC: WAL-MART EMPLOYEES
 Floor Plan
 TIRE SHOP ENTRANCE
 FISHING/SPORTING AREA
 PARKING LOT
I took an inside look on how Wal-Mart is a hidden social problem. When i first entered the parking lot i had seen a security officer driving around in a commercial vehicle, patrolling the premises. Out of most of my previous trips, I have never seen any of the security officers monitor the inside of the building. During a criminal act individuals might catch on to the security officer's daily routine and if it is consistent everyday then that only increases the chances of having criminal activity. Likewise there is a lot of lighting over the parking lot, mainly in the front area of the building. A criminal would be more likely to rob or make an attack on someone on the side of the building, or behind the building instead of in the front where most of the traffic flow occurs. The lighting on the side is dim compared to the lighting in the main parking area. Wal-Mart is, in most cases, a 24 hour department store and there is always traffic, entering and exiting through all hours of the day and night. Surveillance cameras are spread out on top of the building looking out on every angle. There are also cameras that are angled on every row of the parking lot.
All of these features are beneficial for the reduction of crime. All of the surveillance on the outside does not compare to the amount of surveillance that is on the inside of the facility. With the building being as large as it is I think that this is a very good thing to have. With many of the crimes that take place inside of the store I think that emergency assistance buttons could be put onto the same device that is used for price checks. This would help with purse snatching, sexual assaults, lost children, and many other issues. It could also help the security officer who is watching the cameras locate the problem a lot quicker. Furthermore one entrance that lacks security and employee supervision is the tire shop entrance/exit. This door is only accessible during the tire department hours, but a lot of patrons use this door even if they are not getting their vehicle looked at. Most of the workers in this are are busy helping customers or working on vehicles. This are also lacks detectors as well which give a criminal a lot of opportunity to escape.
One important addition to the department's operation is the employees'. They play an important role in supervising over various issues throughout the day/night. The image included shows the different areas where employees' are located. It takes honest workers who are willing to report criminal activity especially with all of the merchandise that is on hand. With the workers presence it helps reduce the chances of criminal activity being committed. One area that that lacked an employee presence was the sporting/fishing section. In order to receive assistance in this area most of the time you have to locate an employee yourself. One benefit for a criminal in this area is that it is located closely to the tire shop exit I mentioned earlier. One Strongly associated perspective with this social problem is the interactionist perspective. Many of the issues that I discussed occur on a daily basis. They are often unseen by either hiding these matters or many of these issues have became socially acceptable. These matters only become of importance to some when a person actually become a victim to some of these crimes.
Some people might often witness these crimes but continue as if they never seen the crime being committed. Although Wal-Mart may deal with individuals who attempt criminal acts in their store on a daily basis there is always room for security enhancements. They have many positive features in their favor that helps them succeed as a large corporation. The interactionist perspective would be used to help deal with these issues and be able to recognize some of this issues through daily interactions.
