BC: Was it her cooking that kept them together for so long?

FC: Nanny's Cooking for Two

1: Not long after I got married, Nanny gave me a stack of note cards. She had carefully written down a ton of recipes for me that just made two servings. Now, you know how Nanny used to cook...it was all by feel. So this must have been so hard for her to do! She told me that it was hard to cook for just two people. She had come up with a bunch of recipes over the years and wanted to share them with me. Now I want to share them with you (sorry it took me so long). Hopefully you'll enjoy them as much as I have. I included a couple of family favorites as well.

2: Nanny's World Famous Potato Salad (as told by Leigh) Ingredients: Potatoes Hard Boiled Eggs Mayo (Nanny probably used Miracle Whip) Mustard Pickle Relish Salt & Pepper So far this is what I've discovered to get it as close to Nanny's as possible: Salt the water when you boil the potatoes. I once asked Nanny how much salt and she said "I just take the container and pour until it feels right" so about heart attack level should do. With the Mayo and Mustard -- just start with a little and then add to it if you need to. That way it doesn't get too mayonnaise-y. A couple of regular spoonfuls to start. I use pickle cubes instead of relish. Nanny used her homemade pickles so they were chopped a little coarser. Secret ingredient: Add some of the pickle juice into the potato salad.

11: Yes, I know technically mac & cheese isn't a main dish... | but I bet some people would disagree!

19: Bertha McMillan's Sweet Stick Pickles (as told by Mom) | Ingredients: Cucumbers 3 1/2 cups vinegar 3 cups sugar 3 Tbsp salt 4 1/2 tsp celery seed 4 1/2 tsp turmeric 3 or 4 tsp mustard seed Directions: Wash & cut the cucumbers into spears. Bring to a boil the vinegar, sugar, salt, celery seed, turmeric & mustard seed. Pack cucumbers into sterilized jars. Pour vinegar mixture over cucumbers. Seal the jars and process (boil) for 5 minutes in a water bath canner.
