BC: Overview: Claire McDonald is always getting in trouble in school. Can she change her ways and become a better student?

FC: Claire Learns a Lesson By Sophia Wertz

Claire Learns a Lesson By Sophia Wertz This book is dedicated to my family, and friends.

Hello, my name is Mrs. Goldworth. As a teacher, I try to value each and every one of my students because they are like "shining light bulbs of joy" to my life! But there are occasional exceptions to that rule.

One student in particular always seemed to be the most disruptive one in our class. If there was some kind of award for being rude, inconsiderate, and annoying, this kid would have won it! Her name was Claire McDonald. Oh, just saying her name was enough to frighten me! | HELLO, MY NAME IS: Claire McDonald

I almost feared coming to school when I had Claire McDonald in my class. I tried so hard to make her a better student, and it finally worked. But it took so long to get there! | I seriously have to consider another job!

Here is how it all began...

About three weeks ago, I was having an engaging discussion on the tools to student success. I think everyone should value homework! | My name is Mrs. Goldworth

I could tell the class was really intrigued by this lecture. They were all staring intently above the chalkboard, where the clock is.

I guess Claire couldn't stand this boredom any longer because she screamed at me! | MRS. GOLDWORTH...

"MRS. GOLDWORTH!! DROP THE SUBJECT ALREADY!", Clarie yelled at the top of her lungs. "There, that felt better." she added. The whole class just stared at her.

I was shocked at Claire's outburst. Well, I sort of expected something like this to happen with her, but I thought she had more self-control than that!

"Excuse me!" I yelled. "Sit in the corner, CLAIRE!".

We all watched as Claire laughed all the way to the corner. Did she not take anything seriously?

I really hoped that it was at least a little humiliating for Claire. She definitely deserved a punishment like that!

I couldn't even sleep that night! I kept waking up thinking about the problems Claire has been causing.

But being the nice teacher that I am, I decided to forgive Claire for her behavioral problem. Hopefully she won't interrupt ever again. | Oh, whatever...

You know how I said I hoped Claire was better behaved from now on? Well, I was wrong. Guess what she did! She forgot her homework! What kind of student forgets their homework?! | I seem to be missing my homework...

I WAS SO MAD AT THAT KID! Of course, Claire thought this was all a joke. She started laughing with her friend, Liz! | That's so funny, Liz!

I gave her a detention. I'd decided that the only way I could get her to be a better student was by talking to her. | DETENTION PASS: For: ___Claire McDonald____ Arrive at 2:40 with your backpack. Your teacher will discuss with you about your behavioral problems. Thank you and good luck surviving detention!

I took a full three minutes out of my day to wait for Claire to show up to detention! And she never did! What a waste of my time. | CLAIRE! When do you plan on showing up?!

If we counted all the times Claire angered me that day, I'm sure we'd be at twenty by now.

After I cooled off, I decided that I'd just request a conference with Claire's parents to talk about her behavior. | You're Invited! What: A Parent-Teacher Conference When: This evening at 7:00 Why: To discuss your daughter's horrific behavior.

On the night of the conference, Claire's parents showed up, dragging Claire in behind them. We discussed the extraordinarily long list of problems Claire had caused in the classroom.

Claire smiled like a perfect angel and said she would vow to behave better for the rest of the school year. Oh, please! I didn't buy that for one second! | I solemnly swear...

I guess I may have been just a little bit wrong, because Claire really showed achievement in her behavior at school the rest of the year.

She never talked during class unless it was to ask an educated question.

Claire remembered to do her homework every night, and she got an A-plus in my class! | Grade Report Card: Claire McDowell Mrs. Goldworth- A+

Now, don't tell anyone I said this, but I actually ENJOYED having Claire in class! How freaky is that? | Shhh...

The other teachers and I thought of some way to reward her. Then, it hit us!

"And the recipient of the Most-Improved Award is.... CLAIRE MCDOWELL!", said the announcer at the school awards ceremony. Everyone cheered for Claire as she was handed her award. | Most Improved Award | Claire McDonald

Claire really deserved that award, because she learned the lesson of respect! | I'm very proud of you, Claire!
