FC: Max Ernst By: Brandon Cloutier
Max Ernst was born on April 2, 1891 in Bruhl, Germany. He was born into a family of 9 children. He was a Surrealist who served in WWII before even going into the artist field.
In 1922, Ernst left his first wife to flee to Paris, where he remained until 1941. In this time, Surrealism came to displace Dadaism with the publication of André Breton's "First Surrealist Manifesto" in 1924.
During this time Ernst established the art technique of frottage (the French word for "rubbing"), laying paper on the floor and rubbing over it with pencil to create the textural effect of wood.
War and Fascism followed Ernst to France, and he was sent to internment camps three times before escaping to the United States in 1941.
Max's father Philipp Ernst was a teacher for the deaf and an amateur painter. This inspired max to become an artist as well. His mom Luise Ernst was a nee Kopp.
Max never really had any formal art training. In 1910-1914 he studied philosophy at Bonn University and that is where he took a deep interest in painting and being an artist.
With the outburst of the first World War, Ernst was enrolled into the army. He served as an artillery till the end of the war. In the mean time he never gave up the interest in the art field.
In the year 1914 Max got acquainted with Jean (Hans) Arp, and their lifelong friendship began. It was during the war, in 1916, when he took part in the "Sturm" exhibition in Berlin. To the same period date his first contacts with Dada artists.
After demobilization Ernst settled in Cologne, where, together with Johannes Theodor Baargeld, he founded a group of Dadaists.
In the paintings of his early Parisian period the artist was able to successfully combine the techniques of painting, assemblage and collage in large-scale paintings with enigmatic plots.
Ernst most famous oil painting was painted in 1921. The central focus of the painting is a giant mechanical elephant. It is round and has a trunk-like hose.
The next famous oil painting that Ernst had was called the "forest and dove". This painting depicts a nocturnal scene of a forest of bizarre, abstract trees. In the thick of the forest is a childlike depiction of a dove.
The First pencil drawing that Ernst created was called "The Hate Makes the Man". It is composed of cut out images of hats from catalogues linked by gouache and pencil outlines to create abstract anthropomorphic figures.
Quotes | All good ideas arrive by chance. | Painting is not for me either decorative amusement, or the plastic invention of felt reality; it must be every time: invention, discovery, revelation.
