FC: What are Cells?
1: Robert Hooke discovered the cell in 1665.He said it looked similar to cellula, small rooms that monks stayed in. The name cell was derived from that word.
2: The cell was defined as "the fundamental organization of life" by Henri Dutrochet
3: Animal Cell: Eukaryotic | Plant Cell: Eukaryotic | Bacteria cell: Prokaryotic
4: There are two types of cells: prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Prokaryotic cells like bacteria do not have organelles or structures inside it. Eukaryotic cells like plant and animal cells have organelles.
5: Animal Cell Structure | nucleus- the command center of a cell | mitochondria- produces energy
6: DNA- controls function, behavior and development of the cell | chromosomes- contain genetic information
7: cell membrane- forms a barrier between the inside and outside of the cell. | flagella- move liquid over the surface of the cell
8: cilia- move liquid or materials past the cell | centrioles- pull chromosomes apart during mitosis
9: Endoplasmic Reticulum- stores, separates, and serves as the cell's transport system | Rough ER contains ribosomes
10: Ribosomes- inject proteins directly into cytoplasm | cytoplasm- maintains the shape and consistency of the cell and provides suspension to organelles
11: vacuoles- store, digest, and remove waste | Cell Wall- protects the cell from physical harm and provides support and structure for the cell
12: Lysosomes- digest cells that were brought into the cell and digest old organelles | Golgi Apparatus- transports chemical produccts
13: Cytoskeleton- acts as framework and gives the cell its shape | Chloroplast- absorbs the sun's energy and converts it to chemical energy which fuels chemical reactions in the cell
14: Plant cell Structures | Plants have the same organelles as animal cells. Only plant cells contain chloroplast and a cell wall.
15: Bacteria cells | Bacteria cells were one of the first cells on earth and unlike animal and plant cells bacteria do not have any organelles. | They have flagella and pili to move around.
17: The nucleus creates DNA to make ribosomes. Ribosomes are made in the nucleolus, then they are transported to the rough endoplasmic reticulum to make proteins. Those travel through the endoplasmic reticulum. to go to the golgi body. The golgi body then prepares them to be transported to the cell border.
