"Tim is the most devoted caregiver imaginable, but we really cherish those times when Tim knows that I have two students to help me and he can go off and swim on his own for a while, maybe even use the hot tab. I am currently under the care of both physical and occupational therapy, and they are documenting the changes they have observed since I have been taking Ampyra and swimming every Saturday. These therapists I have had for several years, so they are familiar with my case. Yesterday, February 17, I had physical therapy. The therapist, Tim & I were all in shock as we watched my foot moving both forward and backward for the first time in years! It was so nice to be able to tell her what we've been working on in swimming and get some feedback as to other exercises I can do to help strengthen my feet even more. -Judy"
People with MS have a wide variety of exercise needs - most of which can be accommodated in the water.
Students from the University of Dayton Physical Therapy Doctoral Program work alongside the participants to maximize workouts
The class is so relaxing, I don't worry about my MS when I'm in the water. The instructors are great, the benefits far out-weigh any bathing suit anxiety and it's fun. I hope this program continues, thanks for putting it together. - Bonnie
MS Swim sessions are led by students and staff from UD's Doctoral Physical Therapy (DPT) Program | The swim class was the most fun I have had in a long time. I look forward to being there again and enjoying the companionship with everyone. It is such a nice class and the exercises are wonderful. - Lisa
In regard to the idea of how I benefit from our swim class, for me it's therapy! I do no exercise as much as I should on a regular basis, so having the opportunity to exercise in a stress free and casual environment is great. We really appreciate how beautiful the facility is as well, and the staff has been very helpful and pleasant to work as too. PLEASE KEEP THIS PROGRAM AVAILABLE TO US!! 'Thank You So Very Much!! - Linda
The Saturday swim program at UD has not only been an enjoyable time for me but also makes my body feel good. I have also enjoy getting to know you and the others that have been coming. I hope the NMSS Ohio Valley Chapter will continue to support this wonderful program as I will miss it tremendously if it is canceled. I will continue to tell others about the program and try to convince them regarding how beneficial it can be to them to come and participate. - Heidi
I love the UD swim program! I have been confined to a wheelchair for 5 years. This is the first time in 3 years I have actually walked or taken steps. The UD volunteer students are a GREAT help! Thanks so much, Diane
Just wanted to thank you for getting the MS swim program started at UD. I am so pleased with the program they have established for us. The instructors and student assistants are very pleasant and eager to help each of the persons who come each Saturday. They make the workouts enjoyable and productive. The facility is awesome and provides us a wonderful place be active. And the camaraderie of the participants has been wonderful too. While I try to go to the gym each week, I find the activities we do in the pool to be much more worthwhile. The instructor led aerobics give me a well rounded exercise program that stretches, flexes, and strengthens me. Also, doing these things in the pool provides me with the stability and balance assistance I need to be able to do a good workout. A definite plus. I know we are challenged by their program as my wife, Paula, who does not have MS, says she finds it both intense and fun too. It makes working out something we can both look forward to each Saturday. Thanks again for making this happen and we look forward to continuing this for a long time. Sincerely, Jim

I am fortunate to spend time in the pool with this special group of people. All of us benefit not only from the exercise, but also the socializing with others who understand the day-to-day struggles of MS. My thanks to everyone who has helped me make this program a reality. ~- Laura Kolaczkowski
