The first day of school is usually a pretty exciting day for most students. However, some students dread this day. Dread can happen for various reasons. Maybe a student just really dislikes school; the student may feel that it is stupid that they have to spend their day inside of a classroom. Or maybe the student doesn’t feel like they understand the material and so they do not like how that makes them feel. They feel stupid themselves so what’s the point in going? Who’s to blame for this? Is the student just not able to comprehend or is it the schools way of teaching?

According to this OK.Gov, Oklahoma City Public Schools remains the largest school district with an enrollment of 43,492 students. This was posted on Jan of 2012. If our school system here in Oklahoma City has the highest enrollment for the state of Oklahoma, then why are we getting horrible grades on our report card? We send our children to school with the expectation to learn. Our children are to make good grades and should be able to move from grade to grade while retaining information. In the hope that they will one day graduate, and possibly go to college.

I decided to see how our Oklahoma City Public School system rated based on the A-F scale. There are a total of ninety-four public schools in our district, according to OK.gov. You would think that with this many schools that we were doing a good job at educating our children. I have children and I know that there are not many schools that actually have high academic standards for their students. However, I was surprised to see the number of schools and how many of them were so below average. Out of the ninety four schools, there were ONLY SIX A’s. There were a total of 15 B’s, 31 C’s, 41 D’s, and 1 F.

This is totally unacceptable in my opinion. Then we wonder why there is so much crime and why it continues to increase. If our children are not getting a proper education then how can they be expected to find good jobs? Jobs that could keep them off the street and that they could actually provide for their families? I understand that some children just refuse to do their work and learn. But based on these findings, it’s hard to believe that this is the students fault. This has to be how the system is set up. It is obviously not working.

. I believe that more parents need to be involved in their child’s education. We should petition for change in the system so that our children are getting a better education. Maybe we should take notes from the six schools that are making an A and implement their standards into the other schools. We need to have higher standards for our education system so that our children feel like they are able to make something of themselves. If our children are able to do well in school, then that can help raise their self-esteem.

They can actually believe that they can do something with their life and help keep them out of trouble. We have to raise our standards now so that our children’s children have something to look forward to!
