In this photo journal of the event of Better Together held on October 23rd, 2011, it will display what took place, what I learned, and how it addresses the objectives of the course. The objectives of this course that were addressed by attending this event included: drawing upon a variety of resources from the school and the community-at-large in developing enhanced social studies opportunities for students, incorporating local, regional, national, and global perspectives into the teaching of social studies, and designing learning activities that lead students to a sense of increased civic efficacy which is the willingness to assume citizenship responsibility.
Mayor Thomas Henry of Fort Wayne came to see and thank the volunteers for coming out and making the community of Fort Wayne better.
I had the opportunity to work with some people from my class including Felicia, Courtney, and Allison.
Sara is in the center picture digging out all the grass and weeds in the garden area. While in the top picture the three girls are planting bulbs in a creative design for next spring!
I am working hard and meeting new friends while weeding out the grass and the weeds in the garden area.

Autumn Leaves Are Falling Down | There were many people that came out to volunteer from all over the community to do some garden work and landscaping for the Saint Francis Church.
 Hard work always pays off!
We constructed these compost bins out of lumber. It was a lot of hard work, but doing this project encouraged teamwork and communication skills. | Objective for the Course: Design learning activities that lead students to a sense of increased civic efficacy.
I learned from attending this event that social studies is all around us especially in our community. I gained through participating in this volunteer project that it is fun to make new friends, help out in the community, and work outdoors. I have improved my communication and teamwork skills by being involved in this event. The Better Together event definitely addressed many objectives of the course primarily focusing on drawing upon a variety of resources from the community to develop enhanced social studies opportunities for students. I believe great volunteer opportunities like this one can be essential to add in the school curriculum to address social studies standards and objectives. Also, students can take away from this experience many developmental skills and can appreciate and maintain enthusiasm for the social studies.
