It was late that night when I arrived in the little town of Paprika. Dinner was served long ago, and all the local town folk had slipped deeply into the land of dreams.
By the time I made it to a small inn, the clock was almost at the stroke of 2. As I tiredly stumbled up the stairs to my room, with keys in hand I asked the slightly obtuse clerk, "Will breakfast be served?"
The clerk chuckled slightly and then asked, "This is your first time in Paprika, isn't it?" I was in a groggy mood, so in spiteful tongue I spat, "What exactly does that have to do with breakfast?!" She chuckled yet again and ominously muttered, "Come outside bright and early tomorrow morning, you will get your meal." ***
I stood in the courtyard, impatiently awaiting my breakfast, when it happened.
It started with a light drizzle of orange juice.
The sky was park- pigeon gray as everyone raised their glasses to catch the abnormal precipitation.
A shower of milk helped wash it down. | I stared in awe as the main course, soft, silky, syrup- covered, scrumptious crepes, flopped tenderly from the heavens.
That was Breakfast. | In amazement I looked over at the smirking night clerk, "How- how is this possible?" I stammered.
"We have no clue. But for every meal, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, food mysteriously falls from the sky. Everyone eats a little more than they should, but that's to be expected." Seeing my slightly sickened expression, she added, "After all, you've gorged yourself silly at buffets before, how is this every different?"
A few hours later came lunch. First up, was salad. | Great green leaves gravitated to the ground. | Closely followed by diced tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette.
Cups were left out on sidewalks and park benches as apple juice trickled from the heavens. All was said and done when hot dogs freakishly blizzard through out town. "Everyone eats a little more then they should," but that was to be expected. after all, you've gorged yourself silly at buffets, how is this any different?"
A few more hours later, and dinner was served. mashed sweet potatoes flooded the streets like teenagers at 3:45 on a Friday.
Soon after, tender rotisserie chicken hailed down. | The Lord seemed to have a special treat in store as giant cookies blow through the tri-state area. "Everyone eats a little more than they should, but that was to be expected. After all, you've gorged yourself silly at buffets, how is this any different?" right?
I returned home that night with more than enough food for thought.
And everyone else in the little town of Paprika went to bed, bellies permanently swollen.
