FC: Mt. Everest

One of the many dangers on Everest are the spaces between the crevasses. Ladders, such as the one shown, are laid down by Sherpas (experienced climbers that live in the Himilayas) before clients of expeditions get to them. The problem, however, is that the ice melts about four feet everyday, making the ladders unstable.

The biggest danger upon Everest is the altitude. At base camp, the amount of oxygen is half as at sea level. The summit has about one third, making it difficult not only to breathe, but also function. Most climbers use oxygen tanks to get to the top.

As beautiful as it may seem, Everest holds a secret. No one would ever know how much of a wasteland Everest is unless they climbed it. The mountain is covered in human waste in places, there are dead bodies, and empty oxygen canisters. Many expeditions have tried to remove some of this waste, over 800 pouds, and Sherpas get a cash bonus for every canister brought down the mountain.

This is a Sherpa. Most expeditions hire between two and four Sherpas to help on the expedition. These men are said to be expert climbers, which brings huge competion to those looking for work. Climbing is one of the highest paid jobs for these men, bringing home $1,400 compared to the average $160 annually.

This is base camp. Usually there is more than one expedition going on at a time. The day John's team reached the summit, about 50 people ascended to the top. Unfortunately, not all of them would live to tell the world they were on top of it.
