12: On the road to the Pyrenees | The Camino de Santiago, or The Way of St. James is the pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried. The Way of St. James has existed for over a thousand years. It was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during medieval times, together with Rome and Jerusalem, and a pilgrimage route on which a plenary indulgence could be earned. The Spanish consider the Pyrenees a starting point. A common starting point near the French border is Roncesvalles. The scallop shell, often found on the shores in Galicia, has long been the symbol of the Camino de Santiago. Over the centuries the scallop shell has taken on mythical, metaphorical and practical meanings, even if its relevance may actually derive from the desire of pilgrims to take home a souvenir.

16: June 25, 1944: Dad and crew were taken here to 'Garate's House', where the Spanish Army was using the basement as a pharmacy. Dad: "We stopped in a small village and were escorted into a small building." According to the villagers, the owner Francisco Garate could speak English, and helped as interpreter. | Below: Pedro was 9 years old, and remembers the soldiers

17: Dad: "We were led across the street to a roadhouse, where an attractive young lady welcomed us. She spoke French, and with my meager high school French, we managed nicely." This woman was probably Elisa Gonzalez, 24 at the time. "I can remember it well... The young flyers were taken to my restaurant. I talked to them in French..." ( This information from research by Marie-Esther Etcharren)

31: Gaudi planned and directed the construction of Park Guell from 1900 to 1914 for Eusebi Guell for a residential park intended for sixty single- family residences. The project, however, was unsuccessful and the park became city property in 1923. Though never fully completed, it still remains one of Gaudi's most colorful and playful works
