1: Basketball only came about because Dr. Luther Gulick, head of Physical Education at the school for Christian Workers, ordered James Naismith to create an indoor game that would provide an “athletic distraction” for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter. James Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario and educated at McGill University and Presbyterian College in Montreal. He was the physical education teacher both McGill University and Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts at the time of his invention. In 1891, under the direction of American phys-ed specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, Haismith, with a dead line of 14 days, invented the indoor sport of basketball.

3: The first position is a point guard, also known as number 1. They are in charge of the floor and tell people where to be on offense. Point guards are usually the fastest players on the team. A shooting guard, nicknamed number 2, is the next position. They can shoot the ball very well and often score the most points. Usually their points come from 3 pointers. These guards also defend the best perimeter player on the opponent’s team. The number 3 position, also known as the shooting guard, is the more active player on the court. These people cut to the basket, have great dribble moves, and try to get steals. Players who have some height usually play the power forward position or number 4. On a zone defense, they play under the basket. Power forwards also tend to get more rebounds and shoot the ball from inside the paint or below the free throw line. The final position, number 5, is center. They have the most height and size out of all the positions. Centers also protect the basket on defense and have the most of the backboard shots.
5: Lydia and I both enjoy basketball very much. In fact, we both played in a league down in Janesville for the McFarland Spartans. This league was every other Saturday and every team that was included played 3 games. The Janesville league was also very competitive; the toughest teams included. Our “A” team for basketball also goes up to state each year for basketball. In order to get to that point, your season must be excellent and you need to receive an invitation. This tournament is highly competitive, with the best teams from all over the state playing. The first time we went up to Wausau, we came back, earning 5th place out of at least 42 teams. Basketball is a major part of are lives and we hope to improve throughout the years and come back from state, once again, successful.
