S: Evaluation Question 7
FC: Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
THE MOUNTAIN TEMPLE, WAT ARAT | November 7th
The natural BEAUTY of southern Thailand was stunning.
I believe I have learnt a huge amount since the preliminary task. I approached the 2 tasks similarly but with the main task i had more time to do research of existing real media products to understand they way they are layed out and the actual contents allowing me to have more understanding of my product should look like. This is different to the preliminary task as i did little research so didn't have a huge idea of what school magazines were like. | When it came to the main task I had much more experience and was able to use a variety of more technology to construct my magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. | I was also more able to manage my time better after understanding the time needed for each task when constructing my preliminary task. This was useful in ensuring all the tasks were completed on time so I didn't fall behind.
Therefore, when it came to the music magazine, i knew i had to plan in order to use my time wisely as it is such an important element. I decided to go about this a few different ways but especially using flat plans These helped me hugely as it allowed me to think about how i wanted my product to look and then meet these expectations throughout the construction, using it as a reference. Also in all 3 cases the flat plans did look very similar to the real thing with only slight differences and this was only because once it was up on the screen it looked better slightly differently. | Planning was also key in the construction of my music magazine to help my manage my time but also so i knew what i was doing throughout the task. | I believe the lack of planning for my preliminary task caused many problems for me. I did plan the contents but i didn't use any flat plans so was doing it as i went along which isn't a great strategy. This also meant i managed my time badly and spent too long on the front cover meaning i had to rush my contents page and wasn't as pleased as i had anticipated. | Planning
THE MOUNTAIN TEMPLE, WAT ARAT | November 8
During the process of constructing the magazine, I had to make many creative problem solving decisions to develop my ideas. One decision was the editing of my image. I needed to decide what aspects of the photo needed to be improved in order to make it better. This was easier to do in the main task as I had already practiced with the preliminary task. After I identified the problems I was able to go about solving them and trying different things out to ensure the photo was at its best. It was a very long process and took a while to get the photo to the correct standard, but i got there in the end. | Creative problem solving decisions
Another decision I had to make to develop my ideas was the desktop publishing i used. Photoshop is obviously a manipulating software so was suitable for the use of editing my image, and i also thought it would be useful to construct the front cover and contents pages due to all the tools and effects it can do. However, i decided to use InDesign for the construction of my contents page as i thought this would produce a better outcome and would be easier to use than photoshop. These programs are quite complicated to use for beginners so by doing the preliminary task first, it enabled me to become familiar with the software and how to do specific things using the wide range of tools available. if i had not have done this, it would have taken me longer to do the main task due to not knowing how to use it properly.
The photographs used for my school magazine had little thought go into them and i only took a few. I took them during the school day and didn't plan the location, props or clothing. When I was taking the photographs i didn't consider the lighting, angle or framing of the photograph and didn't quite realize the importance of this, until i was constructing the front cover. Also, i could have used more variety in the photos on the contents page as they show very little about the school. ' | Photography
However, the photographs taken for my music magazine were planned and thought about carefully. I also took many photos to ensure I had a wide variety and a good picture I decided on 2 different locations, to get a more photoshoot look for the front cover by using a plain background and then to get more interesting pictures for the double page spread by taking them outside. I decided on the clothing based on the genre of my music and the people i am targeting. I also decided to not use any props as I didn't think any were suitable for the genre of my music magazine and after using props on the front cover of my school magazine I didn't feel it was necessary and made it too busy.
WEST KRABI COAST | November 10 | I also learnt that the front cover picture of any magazine needs to engage the reader which can easily be done by a straight forward direction of gaze and eye contact. I did not achieve this on the preliminary task and looking back now I feel the image would have been better on the contents page. Also, the photograph of the school magazine needed to be brightened slightly.
I also learnt a lot about the layout after my preliminary task. I realized that having the test over a busy image like the one on the school magazine was a mistake as some of the writing can not be read very easily and it doesn't look very professional. HOwever I learnt this and did not do it on my music magazine Also the layout on a contents page is always 3 columns which i did not realize at the time of constructing the preliminary task due to very little research
