He would carry this always in order to survive. He would also be wearing his military uniform. It was essential to always have a fresh uniform because soldiers got pretty wet sometimes. He also had a bag so carry his stuff in. He was moving constantly so he always had a bag to carry all of his things in.

These are some things Perry got while he was in Japan on his way to Vietnam One thing he got was a Japanese comic book for Kenny, his younger brother, since he likes comics. Perry along with the rest of the soldiers got meal tickets to get food to eat. He had to keep it in order for him to eat. Since he doesn't have a great relationship with his mom, he also got a little parasol for her as a nice gift.

Perry collected a handful of disease-fighting things throughout the book. One thing he got was malaria pills because there is an abundant supply of mosquitoes in the jungles of Vietnam. These obviously prevented them from getting malaria. He also carried aspirin the relieve bad headaches from the constant artillery fire. he also carried band aids whenever he went on a mission in case someone was injured.
 Medic! Medic!
This is a letter written to a soldier who was killed but lived in the same town as Perry. Perry had been asked to revise this letter and make any changes to it. From then on, Perry edited a lot of the letters that people in his squad wrote. It was especially significant because Robinson, the dead soldier had been very close friends with Perry when growing up.
To: Mr. and Mrs. Robinson, I am sorry to tell you that your son Johnny was tragically killed while fighting off the enemy. He wa a brave soldier and died for the liberty if his country. I am sorry you must find out this way. | Soldier's Grave
These are some things Perry did to entertain himself. While at a hospital, Perry came across a man who had many books that Perry knew. He read some to the wounded soldier and this was probably one the only ways to entertain yourself when you are in the middle of a war. Perry as his squad played a lot of volleyball against other squads. This showed that they were a strong squad, though low in numbers. he also watched a lot of films when he was in a hospital. Since he never got to do that much, he would probably carry a movie or two with him.
To calm himself down, Perry started to smoke cigarettes. It shows that even in these bad times, there is always a way to find relaxation, which he found in cigarettes. Many soldiers, including Perry, where very religious and constantly prayed to God. Perry had a bible to he could read passages and pray every day. This another way Perry could achieve relaxation. Perry also had salve because he got a bad skin rash a few times. The salve made he rash go away and made him feel much better.
At one point in the story, Perry and some other soldiers in his squad were arguing about the word "welcher." Perry could carry a dictionary just in case he needs to resolve another word argument or to try to talk to the Vietnamese. Brew was another one of Perry's friends in his squad that was killed. Both of them were injured but Perry survived and Brew did not. Perry's praying to God had paid off. To make his gun useful, he carried bullets so he could kill any enemies that tried to kill him. These were his lifeline and had to have them at all times.

After the war, Perry was thinking about going to Hawaii. He could carry a plane ticket so that when the war ended, he could go directly to Hawaii. he also carried insect repellent to try to prevent all the bugs from getting to him. He also carried candy to give out to needy Vietnamese who had scarce food. It is a symbol of goodness and Perry was not in short supply of it either.
Perry was wounded while fighting. While he was recovering in the hospital, he was given a Purple Heart for his brave fighting and for defending his country. He would collect to remind himself of all the good he has done for his country and that his sacrifices that he had to make would not go unnoticed. It is a symbol of bravery and honor, which Perry showed while he was in combat.
