Tips Reduce your carbon footprint! Leaving your car at home twice a week can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 1,600 pounds per year. Shower power! A full bathtub requires about 70 gallons of water, but taking a five-minute shower saves water by using 10 to 25 gallons. Put a little timer or clock near your shower so you can see how fast you are. | Don't trash it - reuse it! Be creative as you look for new ways to reduce the amount or kinds of household waste. Give cardboard tubes to pet hamsters or gerbils. Plant seeds in an egg carton.
Earth Day 2011, this April 22, reminds us that even in this time of unprecedented environmental challenge, every citizen has the power to affect change on a local, national and global level.
Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. first held on April 22, 1970.
Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.
Since 1970, Earth Day celebrations have grown. In 1990, Earth Day went global, with 200 million people in over 140 nations participating, according to the Earth Day Network (EDN), a nonprofit organization that coordinates Earth Day activities. "Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro." In 2000, Earth Day focused on clean energy and involved hundreds of millions of people in 184 countries and 5,000 environmental groups, according to EDN
Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to watch a TV for three hours - it's equivalent to half a gallon of gasoline. Earth Day is a relatively new holiday and was first celebrated on April 22 in 1970. More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration Earth Day was founded by a senator of Wisconsin and the day is credited for creating the environmentalism movement April 22 is the first official day of Spring in the Northern hemisphere and of Fall in the Southern hemisphere and was chosen to be Earth Day for this reason.
Never underestimate the importance of recycling: if every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. Unfortunately only 27% of all American newspapers are recycled. More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it. Only 11% of the earth's surface is used to grow food. The world's first national park was started in 1872 at Yellowstone National Park in the US.
If just 25% of U.S. families used 10 fewer plastic bags a month, we would save over 2.5 BILLION bags a year. On the average, the 140 million cars in America are estimated to travel almost 4 billion miles in a day, and according to the Department of Transportation, they use over 200 million gallons of gasoline doing it. Every year we throw away 24 million tons of leaves and grass. Leaves alone account for 75% of our solid waste in the fall. Over 100 pesticide ingredients are suspected to cause birth defects, cancer, and gene mutations.
Glass produced from recycled glass instead of raw materials reduces related air pollution by 20%, and water pollution by 50%. Americans use 50 million tons of paper annually -- consuming more than 850 million trees. Homeowners use up to 10 times more toxic chemicals per acre than farmers
