2: The Little Rock Nine were a group of African American students from Central High School in Arkansas. They were enrolled in a white school, and white mobs went crazy on the student's first day of school because they thought the school was for whites only.
3: President Eisenhower sent the 101st Airbourne Division to make sure that the student's completed a safe and successful day.
4: The nine student's families were under extreme pressure after the incident occured. They were forced to resign from their jobs,or they were fired.
5: In retaliation, African Americans performed sit ins.
6: A sit in is where a protestor or protestors nonviolently protest by occuping a specific area. They usually take place at establishments such as restaurants or offices.
7: In the midst of the chaos, Arkansas governor, Orval Fabus, was trying to shut the school down, but it was declared unconstitutional, and the school remained open.
8: Today, Elizabeth Eckford is the only student from the group still living.
9: The students have won several awards for their courage, such as the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999.
10: A statue also stands in Little Rock, Arkansas in their honor.
11: Not to mention, they are in history books all across the U.S.
