FC: al Qaeda International group formed by Osama bin Laden in the late 1980s that has vowed to fight against US and over throw what he calls corrupted Muslim governments Al Qaeda is the main terrorist group in the Middle East.
1: Arab A member of a group of people originally from the Arabian peninsula and surrounding territories who speaks Arabic and who inhabits much of the Middle East and northern Africa. The arabians are from the Arabian peninusula and that is located in the Middle East.
2: Bedouin Nomadic pastoralists of the Arabian peninsula; culture based on camel and goat nomadism; early converts to Islam. The Bedouin's are located in the Middle East and are camel riders.
3: Fundamentalism Literal interpretation and strict adherence to basic principles of a religion. Fundamentalism is trying to get people to do stuff for your religion.
4: Christianity A monotheistic system of beliefs and practices based on the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus as embodied in the New Testament and emphasizing the role of Jesus as savior. Christianity is the most popular religion in the U.S. and is also the most growing religon.
5: Hijab A headscarf worn by Muslim women Women in the Middle east wear headscarfs to cover their skin and hair.
6: Hamas A militant Islamic fundamentalist political movement that opposes peace with Israel and uses terrorism as a weapon. The Hamas does not want peace and they terrorize the Israeal.
7: Intifada An uprising by Palestinian Arabs against Israel in the late 1980s and again in 2000. The Intifada attacked Palestinian Arabs twice.
8: Islam The monotheistic religion of Muslims founded in Arabia in the 7th century and based on the teachings of Muhammad as laid down in the Koran. Islam is another major religion in the Middle East.
9: Jihad A holy struggle or striving by a Muslim for a moral or spiritual or political goal; sometimes called a "holy war" A Jihad is a war for a goal by a Muslim.
10: Judaism The monotheistic religion of the Jews having its spiritual and ethical principles embodied chiefly in the Torah and in the Talmud. Judaism is a major religion in the Middle East and is monotheistic which means one god.
11: Mosque (Islam) A Muslim place of worship. Muslims worship in mosques.
12: OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) International cartel that inflates price of oil by limiting supply; Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and UAE are prominent members. OPEC controls hom much oil is supplied to increase the price on oil.
13: Yom Kippur (Judaism) a solemn Jewish fast day; Day of Atonement. You cannot eat during Yom Kippur if you are Jewish.
14: Palestinian An ethnic group of Arabs formerly living in Palestine. A Palestinian person is a person that lives in Palestine.
15: Ramadan (Islam) a fast, held from sunrise to sunset, that is carried out during the ninth Islamic month. Ramadan is the like Youm Kippur except it is the Islam fast.
16: Shiite A member of the smaller branch of Islam that regards Ali as the legitimate successor to Mohammed and rejects the first three caliphs. A Shiite Muslim is a muslim that rejects the first three caliphs.
17: Sunni A member of the largest branch of Islam that accepts the first four caliphs as rightful successors to Muhammad. Different from the Shiite Muslims, Sunni Muslims accept the first four caliphs.
18: Mosque (Islam) a Muslim place of worship A place of worship for a Muslim.
19: Taliban A group of fundamentalist Muslims who took control of Afghanistan's government in 1996. The taliban took control of the Afgan government in 1996.
20: Zionism A policy for establishing and developing a national homeland for Jews in Palestine. Zionism is making a homeland for Jewish people in Palestine.
