Time The Phanerozoic Eon occurred 2.5 billion to 542 million years ago.
What was happening A lot of things happened during the Phanerozoic Eon. For example, plants expanded their development, and they became able to carry out the photosynthetic process and release free oxygen into the atmosphere thus making the fossil record much richer. Dinosaurs, turtles, crabs, and crocodiles lived on the land.
Plants There are different kinds of plants that lived during that time. Most of them lived under the sea. These plants that lived under the sea are the same plants that can be found there today. Some plants lived on land but these became extinct: Embryophytes, Bryophytes(that still exist) and polyspoorangiophytes are examples of such plants.

 Crabs Crocodile Dinosaurs Turtles
Animals Most animals in this eon are still with us today: turtles, crocodiles, crabs and snails are examples of such animals. These animals still live today because they adapted to a changing climate. One animal that we don't have today are dinosaurs. They didn't survive because they were unable to adapt to new conditions. So, these are the animals of Phanerozoic Eon.
Climate The climate in the Phanerozoic Eon was different than it is now. The Earth's climate alternated between cool (icehouse) phases and warm (greenhouse) phases. Cool phases were marked by low temperatures, low sea levels, and the appearance of continental ice sheets. The warm phases, which are with us today, are characterized by high temperatures, high sea levels, and lakes formed by continental glaciers. This climate change has helped many animals and plants to survive and others to become extinct.

Summary The Phanerozoic Eon has lasted from 2.5 billion to 542 million years ago and is the current eon. This eon was marked by the explosion of plant and animal life. From Embryophytes to flowering plants to those plants under the sea, plants developed and grew. Animals such as turtles, crocodiles, crabs and snails began to populate the environment and at the same time dinosaurs became extinct. The Earth's climate alternated between the cool (icehouse) phases and the warm (greenhouse) phases which are getting hotter and hotter today.
