2: Charles Darwin | He was a naturalist aboard the HSM Beagle and figured out the formation of coral reefs.
3: EDWARD FORBES | Forbes studied the vertical distribution of life in the ocean. Concluded that plant life is limited to the sunlight zone near the water's surface
4: THE HSM CHALLENGER found 1,717 new species and recorded the water depth of the Mariana Trench
5: Alfred Wegener | Created a theory on tectonic plates and pangea broke apart 180 million years ago.
6: The Ming Dynasty sent large ships on diplomatic missions with a navigational compass. The Chinese only reached to Africa. | chinese
7: Captain James Cook | went on 3 voyages and used a marine chronometer to keep accurate time on the ship created by John Harrison. Cook as well mapped the regions in the ocean.
8: Fridtjof Nansen He was on the Fram Ship and proved that the water has high salinity. Created the Nansen bottle for accurate depth sampling
9: Victor Hansen solved the commercial of abundance fish by studying planktology. Found out that most microscopic ocean life are found in cold waters.
10: Benjamin Franklin | Franklin's nephew created a chart of the gulf stream which helped colonists by shorting their voyages
