FC: Our Solar System

In our solar system, nine planets circle around our Sun. The Sun sits in the middle while the planets travel in circular paths (called orbits) around it.

*The Earth is the densest major body in the solar system. | Earth *The Earth is orbited by one moon. *The Earth is 4.5 to 4.6 billion years old *Earth is a small, rocky planet which supports a variety of life!

Mercury *Unlike many of our nine planets, Mercury has no moons. *Recent radar information shows evidence of ice at Mercury's north pole!

Venus *Venus is a small, rocky planet blanketed in a thick layer of yellowish clouds. *Venus' surface is very hot - about 400 degrees Celsius! *The first spacecraft to visit Venus was Mariner 2 in 1962

Mars *Mars is a small, rocky planet which is cold and lifeless. *Mars has permanent ice caps at both poles made up mostly of solid carbon dioxide. | *Very strong winds and vast dust storms sometimes blow through the entire planet for months!

Jupiter *Jupiter is a giant gas planet which is made up of about 90% hydrogen and 10% helium. *Jupiter is so big that you could cram 1,000 Earths inside of it! | It is thought that Jupiter's "Great Red Spot" is a storm of swirling gas that has lasted for hundreds of years.

*It's most famous for its thousands of beautiful rings. *Saturn has 18 known moons | Saturn | Saturn's rings are made up mostly of water ice, but they may also include rocky particles with icy coatings.

Uranus *Uranus spins differently from most planets. *Uranus has 15 known moons.

Neptune *Neptune has been visited by only one spacecraft, Voyager 2 | *Neptune has 8 known moons

Pluto | *Pluto is a small, icy "dwarf planet". | *Pluto has one moon. It's called "Charon."

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite and the fifth largest natural satellite in the Solar System. *Earth's gravity pulls on the Moon and keeps it in orbit

MixBook Lesson Plan SECTION ONE Author: Sara Rich Email Address: sjr8432@missouriwestern.edu Semester Created: Fall 2008 LESSON OVERVIEW Title: Our Solar System Brief Description: The students will learn about the solar system. After our unit on the solar system the students will get into groups picked by the teacher and make a mixbook about what they have learned. This will include writing a paragraph about each planet and finding pictures on the internet to fit that planet. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS/GENERALIZATIONS: The student understands that… the Earth is one of the several planets and the moon orbits the earth. The students will also recognize that the planets look like stars and appear to move across the sky. ENGAGING QUESTION/SCENARIO: During our unit on solar systems, I will put many books in the reading center about the solar system. We will also watch a video called, My Fantastic Field Trip to the Planets. These will make the students excited to learn more and make a mixbook. SUBJECT AREA(S) Science Writing GRADE LEVEL Grade 5 DETAILED LESSON DESCRIPTION GLE #1: SWBAT Recognize the Earth is one of several planets within a solar system that orbits the Sun. 15: COLLABORATION Special Education teachers will be involved to help or assist the students of special needs write paragraphs when needed. Length of Unit: 8 days, 1-2 hours each day *Day 1- There will be new books in the reading center about the solar system. *Day 2- The students will still have the opportunity to read the books and ask questions. *Day 3- The students will watch a video on the solar system and we will have an open discussion on question the students might have or just facts they know about the solar system already. *Day 4- The students will began their research on the planets and start writing 1st drafts. *Day 5- The students will look up pictures on the internet of the planets and finish their summaries of the planets. Day 6- The students will begin their mixbooks with their groups. Day 7-8- The students will finish up and share their projects with the class. ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS ELL/IEP Students: The students will be allowed more time and have a helping partner when needed. MANAGEMENT/ORGANIZATION TIP: Set a timer so you stay on task.
