S: The Commonplace Book

BC: Dear Mrs. Geist, I wanted to use the back cover of this book not to earn brownie points before you give me my grade, but to truly show my gratitude for having you as my teacher this year. I can honestly say that your course has made me feel so much more confident about taking AP Literature next year. I have never considered any of the work that we do in this class as busy work, all of it has served a purpose. So thank you for everything, and all that is yet to come. You have been, and will hopefully continue to be, an excellent teacher and a friend who I sometimes consult with when I am in doubt. Thank you for such an amazing first quarter. -Nadia Peyravian

The A merican Dream Reform Now to Save the Children | "We will reform social security and Medicare, sparing our children from struggles." -George W. Bush (from his inaugural speech)

Regardless of my views on Bush, this quote truly signifies the purpose of the American Dream: to better the future for others. Ever since the day America became its own country, the goal has continuously been to reform different aspects of the American culture in order to make America a better place to live in. This quote develops the same idea of reforming. If we take the time to start reforming problems that we are having to deal with such as social security, Medicare, welfare, education, and the economy, in ways that will benefit the entire nation, then we are accomplishing the American Dream. We have to start reforming now, or else the following generations will struggle as well.

Colonial Literature How We the Pilgrims, See the Natives | “Flaying some alive with the shells of fishes, cutting of the members and joints of other by piecemeal and broiling on the coals, eat the collops of their flesh in their sight whilst they live; with other cruelties horrible to be related.” - William Bradford (from Of Plymouth Plantation)

From this descriptive quote, we can see that the Pilgrims' viewed the Native Americans as wild, savage beasts. Just the elaboration that the Pilgrims' used when describing the Natives, allows us to imagine how the Pilgrims' first saw the Native Americans. By describing the Natives in a way that one describes caveman, makes it evident that the Pilgrims probably feared the Native Americans. This sense of fear created represents a pathos argument for the settlers because they are describing the Native Americans' eating habits as horrid behavior. However, through out Of Plymouth Plantation and other colonial literature, it becomes evident that the way the Pilgrims' viewed the Natives eventually changes as they become more acquainted with one another.

The Crucible Laughable Irony | “Adultery, John.” – -Elizabeth Proctor from The Crucible

The irony that comes from this quote is almost laughable. Yet, it reminds of the fact that sometimes, one forgets crimes that one has committed or mistakes that he or she has made. I believe that it is part of human nature to push back these mistakes to the back of one's mind. It is an inevitable thing to do, as I or my fellow peers do the same as well. so, because I can relate to forgetting my pass mistakes, I think that it is satirical when John Proctor forgets that “thou shall not commit adultery” is one of the Ten Commandments.

Arthur Miller's "Why I Wrote the Crucible" Listening to Others' Reasoning | "It demonstrated that a clear moral outcry could still spring even from an ambiguously unblemished soul. " -Arthur Miller (from "Why I Wrote the Crucible")

I interpret this quote as describing that morality and reason can come from a person who truly has a clear and righteous soul that is not always seen as a soul that is clear. Some times we should trust and listen to the reasoning of others who we may be unsure about. I think that it is important for us to allow everyone a voice. A voice for everyone in government and in court should be guaranteed for all. This way, everyone's voice can be heard no matter if we believe if that the person is pure or innocent..

Benjamin Franklin's The Autobiography Simplicity | “This was, therefore, the first house I was in, or slept in Philadelphia” -Benjamin Franklin

Through this quote, I realize that not everything in life has to be stressful and difficult. Instead, things can be simple. For example, in this quote, Benjamin Franklin did not stress over where he was going to sleep at his first night in Philadelphia. So, he simply spent the night at a Quaker meetinghouse. This reveals to me that one should not always have high expectations and should try to find a way to settle for simplicity. This quote has inspired me to try living a more simple and stress-free life.

Longfellow's "Nature" Should I be Hesitant? | "Half willing, half reluctant to be led" -Longfellow

This quote is so inspiring to me, by telling me to look to nature and let it guide me. When one encounters difficult situations, he may experience a mood composed of opposites. In this quote, one is both willing and reluctant to be led. Thus, in times that one is hesitant, he should simply allow mother nature to lead. I believe that one should not be afraid or hesitant of the gentle mother nature.

Longfellow's "The Cross of Snow" | "Such is the cross I wear upon my breast" -Longfellow | The Indelible Burden | Burden | Tears resulting from indelible burdens.

Whenever I see this quote, I have to hold back my tears of regret. They say that one should live life with no regrets, however, I have one regret in my life that has become a burden for me. Since December 24th, 2005, this burden has always been with me, as if it has been imprinted on my chest. It is impossible for me to go one day without thinking of the events of that day. Burdens don't "just go away." They remain with one as if a tattoo on one's heart.

Bryant's "Thanatopsis" | Nature as Our Mirror | "Communion with her visible forms, she speaks A various language; for his gayer hours" -Bryant

This quote has been applicable to my life at least 99% of the time. I can relate to this quote because nature is my copycat. Nature reflects my my mood and interacts with me. When I am upset, the weather is usually cloudy or rainy. When I am happy, it is sunny and I can hear the birds chirping outside. Nature is mirroring our feelings as if it is interacting with us. Nature is the mirror of our lives.

As far back as I remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.-Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) | Goodfellas | My Desire to Become a Gangster

This may sound crazy, but the first movie that I saw was not Cinderella, or Let's Pretend with Barney, it was Goodfellas. My mom tells me that I was around 2yrs old and for 2hours and 26mins, I sat in front of that TV and watched that movie with great interest and awe. She said that for the entire duration of the movie, I was the quietest child she had ever seen. Sure, I probably didn't understand what was going on, but as I got older I gained a strong attachment to this movie and I knew that I wanted to be a gangster when I got older. I never told my parents of my desire because I knew they would tell me that I was crazy and that I should get that thought out of my head because I would be studying Medicine in college, not dropping out and joining the mob. But to to this day, if I had the opportunity, I would want to become a gangster.

Linkin Park's "Breaking the Habit" | Breaking Bad Habits | "So I'm breaking the habit, I'm breaking the habit Tonight" -from "Breaking the Habit"

I used to always bight my nails. I eventually broke that habit by telling myself one day that "Nadia, you need to break this bad, habit." I told myself that if I continued bitting my nails, I may one day get sick from the germs that are going into my mouth, and I may even mess up the growth of my nails. When I put down the consequences, I stopped, it was hard, but I eventually stopped. Ironically, this song was part of the reason that I stopped because it inspired me to break my bad habits. This song came out in the middle of 2004, when I was 10yrs old and had been biting my nails for a couple of months. Nevertheless, I remember listening to this song, and eventually breaking my nail-bitting habit. That was a difficult habit to break, and I can only imagine how hard it must be to break a nicotine addiction or any other substance addiction.

David Guetta's "Gettin' Over You" | There is No Such Thing as Getting Over Someone | "There's no gettin' over No gettin over' There's just no getting over you." -from "Gettin' Over You"

I love the truth that comes out of this song. I believe that there is no such thing as completely getting over someone. It is impossible in human nature to completely get over a death, a break up, or a divorce. I believe that when one says that he is over someone, then that person is in denial. It is impossible to ever fully get over someone that one has previously loved and cared for. I remember how excited I was when this song came out in 2010. I was so excited that David Guetta also produced a song that shows that one can never completely get over someone. There is no such thing as completely getting over someone.

"I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know everything that shines ain't always gonna be gold. " -from "Pursuit of Happiness" | Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" | Pursuit of Happiness as a Journey with Hardships

This is probably one of the more meaningful songs that Kid Cudi has sang. Whenever I listen to this song, it makes me think that I am also on the "Pursuit of Happiness" because I am trying to find that time and place when everything is perfect. Throughout this journey however, I have been encountering road bumps that only make me stronger. I have endured hardships and laughs thus far in my journey. This part of the song also makes me think whether or not there is that perfect moment in life when everything is the way that one wants it to be. Anyhow, I am willing to endure what is yet to come in my pursuit, in hopes of their being a moment of complete and utter perfection in my life.

BLow | Live in the Moment | "Life passes most people by while they're making grand plans for it. " -George Jung(Johnny Depp)

To me, even though it deals with American cocaine smuggling, the movie Blow is one of the strongest movies out there. Every time I watch, it makes me realize that I should be aware of the decisions that I make. I should also live life by the moment, because I will never no what the future holds. My life may suddenly end without me having had time to enjoy it. So, instead of wasting time and making all these extensive plans for the future and only thinking about what will come to us in the future, we should live in the moment.
