FC: Costa Rica July 2006 Costa Rica July 2006 | Pura Vida Pura Vida!
Our Itinerary July 10-20 2006 1. San Jose 2. Monte Verde 3. La Fortuna, Arenal 4. Treehouse 5. Tortuguero 6. Puerto Viejo 7. San Jose
Monday, July 10: Linda's cousin picked us up w/ a truck & SUV and we went to their factory. Next, she took us to the bank & bus station where we began our journey. First stop: Monte Verde. It was a really really long bus ride, but only the beginning of many more to come...
It was dark when we finally arrived. Alot of ppl were solicitating/ advertising their hotel. We found our first nights residence at a very windy place, Golfo.
Tuesday, July 11: Rainforest Trek! we got there by a bumpy 'jeep' ride. Our guide, Johnny explained to us pri. & sec. forests, showed us the stick insect, spider monkeys, Ketzal bird, how to ID vines, diff leaves- to write on or use as TP. We also had a crazy uphillmudhike.
regarding bottled water: "When they say Grande, they mean GRANDE!" | Our guide imitated monkey and bird calls. We heard howler monkeys responding!
We went through many bridges supposedly suspended at the tops of this secondary rainforest. We had to encourage our tour guide to feed us more information. Suspended Bridges Hike
The highlight of the hike: climbing up through the hollow trunk of a tree! That made up for this very tame and unexciting hike :) | this tree was formed by another tree wrapping around the orginal tree.
Ziplining Through the Rainforest Canopy! We got a short lesson on zipline survival tips and off we went! A few of us ran into trees as we zipped from platform to platform. There was a freefall thing where I half screamed. Braking was the freakiest part & Linda & I got blacklisted & went with a guide. That was great cuz we actually got to enjoy the view.;)
"Lean back, lean back" | what were we getting ourselves into ??? | there goes Linda! she got really freaked out cuz they | pretended to throw her off the platform.
Wednesday, July 12: Our Jeep-Boat-Jeep ride to the next destination La Fortuna, Arenal. Our first and safest boat ride of the trip. (L: The motion-sickness drugs made me drowsy...)
Volcano Arenal It was pretty sweet seeing the lava spurting out and hearing the rumbling & crumbling as it flowed down. Our tour guide told us the volcano's history by writing w/ a stick in the mud. We saw toucans, monkeys, & yellow tail birds! And a tree (with aerial roots) that moved as it grew. At the end of the really long hike-- Linda and Ong go for free juice and water without shame. LOL. We stayed @ a bed-n- breakfast: La Fortuna Hotel.
(Right: Us and our guide and tour group) At one point the guide stopped our van so we could see a sloth on a tree by the roadside. After a long day of hiking we went to chill at the Baldi Hot Springs for a couple hours :) | The resort had 15 pools of varying temperatures, massagey waterfalls and bars in the middle of the pools. The source of the pool water was a warm spring/ river that flowed down from Volcano Arenal through the resort.
La Fortuna Waterfall the town's namesake. Thursday, July 13th: the guys rented scooters. Kev, Chris, Hwang and Swen went to waterfall while Ong, Linda and Kyung walked around town, the park square and catholic church and talked. it started pouring like no other. Linda and Kyung decide to go scootering and everybody is soaked except ong who was busy doing sudoku in the hotel. it was funny hanging everything out to dry. (on another note, our hotel had a curfew of 12 midnight.) Anyways, after lunch we caught the bus that took us to the treehouse...i think we weren't sure that the bus would really take us there! At least, I had my doubts about it. Haha :P
We got to the tree house and immediately we spot a 1.5"x4" cockroach-curtain clip welcoming us. all the girls and chris scream and kev fails to catch it :( highlight: awesome orange juice at breakfast the < next morn.
We took a hike in the light rain to waterfall in jungle/rainforest only to find that it was artificial and completely man made. On our way we sang army songs and attempted to make a story about 7 dwarves that ate LINDAR fruits that gave them super powers. We also unfortunately used up half a can of our bug spray on this hike. After we got back, we chilled--all seven of us sat in bed, using Swen as a human pillow. The guys went to Happy Land to get food and got ripped off by the taxi man. Later, we realized that the food could have been delievered. The food was EXCELLENTE! Kyung gets a rash & to get her mind of it, Linda suggests "Lets play ...massage Linda!" Too bad no one fell for it. Hehe.
Friday, July 14th: We forgot to tip our kind driver who treated us to chestnuts/mayo and coconut juice!
We missed our bus so the van driver chased the bus for us. To board the dinky boat to Tortuguero, we had to enter a private plantation. The boat was so unbalanced so Esther kept screaming! O_o
TORTUGUERO Ernesto awaits us and takes us to Maryscar "Hotel" and we got rooms upstairs. We had lunch/dinner at the Meeting Pt restaurant/bar, walked around town and the beach. At night we had drinks and played Indian Poker/Hold'em, & 15,20.
The Shocker: Chris passed out gracefully after 2 beers and freaked everybody out. Thank God he was alright. The local folk were very nice and concerned for Chris, getting him some orange soda and helping us out. Kevin proceeded to talk to Chris on top of his voice at 1am to keep Chris awake in the shower. Esther and Kevin went canoeing at 6:30am next morning in canals while the others slept in.
< our little dinky restrooms. 2 showers and 2 toilets. | Saturday, July 15: We went to watch turtles laying eggs on the beach in the darkness-- it was laying eggs (like 100 pingpong balls) and burying them with its flippers. Amazing sight!
^ wild boars rampaging thru the town. What does one do on a Saturday night in Tortuguero? There was a little shack-club we went dancing at that was really crowded and hot. we danced near the fan and salsa-ed with a random man. Everything was so chill and laid back in this town, time seemed to slow down.
We slathered on the mopiko/tigerbalm cuz of our mosquito bites. Then we did some laundry (by hand!) and walked around town and watched the local soccer game. Dinner were some river lobsters. Back in the room we played SLAP, a violent game of spoons and all got injured.
Sun, July 16 We left by boat (saw cayman, birds, flamingos) The motor died for about an hour so we waited on the deck. Ong, Linda and Chris got soaked by waves! Our boat stalled again when we stopped to watch sloths. We tried to paddle for awhile until a taxi boat tugged us to Moin.
From Moin, we caught a bus to Limon bus station and then walked through the town to find a bus that would take us to Puerto Viejo. We arrived in the evening and finally got to Rockin J's. For dinner we had seafood at Stanford restaurant and Ong got a tummyache after. Meanwhile the rest of the folk had piggyback races on the lawn. Walking around town we saw people playing dominoes at a 'bar' type place...\
Monday July 17: We rented bikes and biked to the beach and went hiking up the side of a cliff and then down to a little cove...it was sooo slippery but finally we all made it to the other side. As we were coming back... the tide got higher, so we kinda had to rush back to the other side while we still could!
We wanted to go see the dolphins and turtles so we rented this dinky boat. Our guide took us way out in the sea. Linda took a turn at steering the motorboat and went in circles while Esther screamed. Actually, we all screamed.
Punta Uva Playing in the ocean around sunset-- really beautiful and surreal because of the mist. Nancy got crushed by the rolling waves - as Linda tried to save her, they both almost drown...
We biked to an argentinian steak house to have dinner. The boys were really excited about it. Linda had a matte-an herbal tea drink drink that was really hot and a little bitter. This beverage is sipped thru a straw.
It was so funny biking on the pot-hole ridden roads on rickety bikes. Actually Hwang got a flat tire and that's why her bike was so slow. Tuesday July 18: Puerto Viejo was one of the most tourist-y places we went to. I think we could actually get by speaking only english in this town. (We headed back to SJ by bus)
July 19 & 20: Our last night was at the Pangea hotel in San Jose....we souvenir shopped at a flea market & practiced our bargaining skills. Funny memory: People had boxes of fried chicken on the flight back
 random shots throughout the trip...
