Top scientists are going into space to see if people can live there for a long time. One of those scientists is Dr. Roberta Lynn Bondar. In January 1992 Roberta became the second Canadian to fly in space and first Canadian woman to fly in space. Roberta Lynn Bondar was born in Sault. Ste.Marie in northern Ontario in December 1945. There was 4 people in her family . . . in her family there is herself, her older sister Barbra, their mom Mildred and their dad Edward.

When Roberta was in grade 7 her dad built her a laboratory in their basement. Roberta did experiments in her new laboratory with test tubes supplied by her dad and a microscope supplied by her uncle who was a pharmacist. As early as age 8 Roberta was thinking about space. She studied the stars in the sky every night and she read science-fiction books and watched science-fiction movies on TV. She imagined herself in one of them. | Roberta’s bedroom walls were covered in posters of space and model rockets. Roberta also loved to watch the satellites going overhead at night. Roberta already knew what she wanted to be. She had 3 things in mind . . .a medical doctor, a scientist and most of all an astronaut. No one believed in her Roberta knew she would achieve in her dreams! she did not only love science | and space but she was also a girl guide and very keen in sports. She led camping and canoe trips and coached sports at YMCA. Basketball was her favorite sport in her teens. In high- school she was female athlete of the year. In high-school Roberta got over her hatred of insects by studying the tent caterpillar for a science studies fair, her project won second place!

Even better it led to summer jobs doing research for the department of fisheries and foresty in Sault Ste on the spruce budworm and studied how the brains of gold fish are affected by the tempeture of the water!!! | In 1968 she graduated and got her self a pilots license. At McMaster University she became a medical | doctor. Roberta had achieved 2 of 3 of her carrier goals but there was still no sing she would go into space.

Dr. Bondar still thought about space. Roberta new all about space. Only some facts she new were the first astronaut in space was Yuri Gagarin and the best-known flight landed American astronauts in space on July 20 1969. On January 28 1996 just 73 seconds into liftoff, 7 astronauts died when the shuttle challenger blew up Roberta still wanted to fly in space but no one new when that might be she might never fly at all. When shuttles started to fly again in 1989, Canada was already planning more flights!!! Dr. Bondar and DR. Ken Money were traveling to about 200 scientists. The scientists chose Roberta and ken to go into space for their experiments!!!

On January 4 1990 the Canadian newspaper announced that the next 2 astronauts in space would be Roberta bondar and ken money!!! There flight had been moved ahead Steve mac learn!!! She practices experiments over and over because in space she would only have one chance to get it right. Dr. bondar’s flight was set for December 6 1990 but the shuttles had a few leaks so it so it was delayed by over a year! She had to wait | till January 22 1992. This time it was only delayed by an hour. Only 9 minutes after lift-off the 7 astronauts were about 300 kilometers above earth!! After 3 hours of observing earth in space Roberta floated into the space lab and started her experiments. While you are in space your back groed about 5 cm’s pr. Week!!” explains Roberta. “We had to take salt pills and were forced to only drink water to regain our back fluids” shortly their backs turned back to normal. | Dr. Roberta bondar achieved all her carrier goals!!! A medical doctor, scientist and an astronaut. When she got back to her hometown millions of people were wating for her at the airport and a parade for her the next day!!! Dr. Roberta Lynn Bondar is now 65 and still living a long and happy life. She has retired and has made a design to not go back into space.

interview questions Sally: If you could not be an astronaut medical doctor or a scientist, what would you do for a living? Robot Roberta: I think she would be an animal doctor. The reason I think she would be an animal doctor is because, animals are like humans. If you are a medical doctor for humans you got to fix the human up right the first time. You must do the same with animals. Sally: What was your favorite subject in grade 7? Robot Roberta: I think her favorite subject in grade 7 was science, because if you want to be a scientist you would have to study her scientist. My second reason is if you want to be an astronaut you would have to study space and you would probably do that in science class. And I think you need to study science to become a medical doctor.
