1: The Secret Life Of Bees | Summary | Lily Owens is a teenage girl with a tragic life. She has no mother due to a horrible accident and an abusive, angry father. When the day come that she gets fed up with her unfortunate life, she runs away to the only place she could think, the city written on the back of her mothers picture. While in Tiburon, South Carolina, Lily and her nanny Rosaleen, find a loving family of bee-keepers. They take Lily and Rosaleen in and treat them like family. In Tiburon, Lily grows and matures, learning about beekeeping, her past, religion, race, and the meaning of family.

3: Lily Owens | Lily is a motherless teenager living on a peach farm, looking for someone to love her. When she escapes the reach of her abusive father, she goes to the only hope of discovering something about her mother, Tiburon, South Carolina. Going there expecting to find her one mother, she gains three other "mothers", who care for her and Rosaleen like family.

4: ROSALEEN DAISE | Rosaleen is Lily's housekeeper/ nanny/stand in mother. She is very opinionated and proud. Throughout the book one of her main goals is to register to vote, her dedication even gets her beat up and sent to jail. She gets along well with the Boatwright sisters and is accepted into their home with ease.

5: JUNE BOATWRIGHT | June Boatwright is not a very warm and fuzzy character. She is very cold and judgmental toward Lily and Rosaleen when they first arrive. She spends her time playing cello for dying people and refusing to get married to the man who she loves.

6: AUGUST BOATWRTIGHT | August is Lily's mother figure, role model, and teacher. She welcomes her immediately and proves to be very kind and loving. She teaches Lily how to tend to the bees and make honey. She was also Lily's mother's housekeeper when she was young

7: “Our mother said she [May] was like Mary, with her heart on the outside of her chest"-August | MAY BOATWRIGHT | May was never the same after her twin sister and best friend died. She is very emphatic to the world around her. She feels everyone else's pain just like it was her own. She is very joyful and loving but anything can set her off and she will instantly become hysterical and sad.

8: O T H E R C HAR C T E R S | T-RAY Terrence Ray Owens is the abusive father of Lily. He makes her childhood miserable and is the reason she ran away. | ZACH Zach is a worker on the Boatwright's bee farm. He is the love interest of Lily and a believer of civil rights and equality. | THE SISTERS OF MARY The sisters are a group of women who follow Black Mary. They come to the Boatwright's house and hold a church service. | DEBORAH FONTANEL Deborah is Lily's dead mother. She is always in Lily's thoughts and memories. She left T-Ray and was killed when Lily was young


10: This is a picture of Black Mary. She is symbolic to Lily because it is what leads her to find the Boatwrights. Also she helps Lily overcome her fear of her father and longing of her mother. | ARTIFACTS | Report Card Math: D Science: C Reading: A Writing: A | This is Lily's report card from her school that she wen to before she ran away. She didn't received good marks in math or science but she did well in reading and writing. This is because she wishes to be a writer.

11: These are gloves that belonged to Lily's mother. She left them behind when she died and Lily found them in her father's closet. Lily keeps them to be reminded of her mother and to feel close to her. | This is a beekeeper's handbook. Lily keeps it to remind her how to tend to the Boatwright's bees. She loves making honey and wants to take good care of the bees.
