1: The religion of Islam was founded by Mohammed in around 622.
2: During the time Mohammed was alive Islam was united as a faith. However it had split into two sections which fought with each other by the 650's AD.

7: They did not feel as though they had political power so they began to search for religious power with anyone else in the Islamic Empire who felt the same way

13: As a result of the fighting and wars between the Shiites and the Sunnis, the Sunnis were successful however the Shiites began to focus on their religious beliefs.
14: Shiite women were not given many rights. Shiite men are legally allowed to starve their wives if their personal demands are not met and they must get permission to leave their own houses
