4: We decided to add a border of colorful tile around the pool. The total area of the pool and border can only be 551 yards...

5: 25 yards | 15 yards | Area: 551 yards

6: Since we do not know what the maximum width of the tile is, we will use algebra to find it... | x= width of border in yards | Write an Equation | (25+2x) (15+2x)=551

7: Area: 551 yards | 25 yards | 15 yards | x | x | x | x

8: Multipy the numbers in the parenthesis by foiling | (25+2x) (15+2x)= 4x2+30x+50x+375 Simplify 4x2+80x+375=551

9: Get everything equal to zero | 4x2+80x+375=551 -551 -551 4x2+80x-176=0 | Divide everything by four | 4/[4x2+80x-176=0] | x2+20x-44=0

10: Now that everything is simplified... Factor | x2+20x-44=0 (x+22)=0 (x-2)=0 -22 -22 +2 +2 x=-22, 2

11: The width of the border is 2 yards!
