BC: The End

FC: Journal entry: Dec 27, 2004 | Theravada Buddhism in Thailand

Yesterday, i woke up. thinking about what i should do. i didn't imagine that my life would change completely in one day

i was on the beach just chilling and enjoying it like any other day. we didn't know that today would be different. the life gaurds on duty called for an evacuation of the beach. we had no idea of what would happen next

a few short hours later, we heard news that a tsunami would hit us. i was terrified because i heard stories of how vicious tsunamis were.

we waited patiently for our doom. it was a sick feeling to await your death or not knowing if you would survive.

the tsunami finally broke in and hit us. there was nothing we could do but try to survive. i was almost sucked into a vortex of water, trying to keep myself afloat.

My mom pulled me out of the swirling vortex and instead of me, her life was taken by the water.

after the tsunami died out. we recovered my mothers body and immediatly arranged for a funeral. we placed the body on the floor of what was left of the house and we awaited the monks to start the ceremony. they placed a white robe on her and said a prayer. my dad and uncle poured water into an overflowing cup as custom for a buddhist funeral.

The body was placed in a casket 3 days later to be cremated. we had the body cremated and waited 5 hours while we prayed. the body finished and we awaited the monks orders.

we had an hour long cermon conducted to benefit my relatives. the sadness if felt couldnt be expressed in any way. i just couldnt cry.

three weeks passed and my mothers ashes were layed in the family tomb. we gave her a new buddhist name as we were commanded and we went on an almsgiving to collect food on her behalf.

A family is pieced together with hope and faith. A family is quilted and bound with love and grace.
