FC: The Northwest Indians

1: History The Northwest Indians lived in the areas that are now California, , Washington, Oregon and Alaska. Native Americans lived there for at least 10,000 years. They gathered food from the lands and waters.The waters and forests of the northwest shaped their daily lives .

3: Social Structure Northwest Indians were part of large groups called moieties. The families would form smaller groups called clans. Everyone in the clan had a job. The men and boys hunted fish. The women and girls gathered crops for food and medicines.

5: Homes The Northwest Indians lived near the ocean. They gathered wood to make their own houses.They gathered a strong wood that stays dry in the wet climate called cedar. The houses had beds, benches, and fire pits.The houses were called plank houses

7: Food Salmon was the main food for the Northwest Indians. The men would catch the salmon with spears and nets. The men also hunted animals for food. The women gathered berries, roots, clams and snails to eat. The women also dried extra food for the winter.

9: Clothing Native Americans make their own clothes. They made lots of clothes such as skirts, shirts, and pants. They use lots of materials such as tree bark. roots,and grasses. They also wore earrings and nose rings made of shells or bone.

11: Economy Northwest tribes traded for things land and waters did not provide. They traded goods that could be found in their area.. They filled canoes with fur and fish to trade. People often traveled great distances to trade good with other tribes. The Kwakiutl would trade shells and the Nootka would trade whale bones.

13: Leisure Time The children enjoyed enjoyed playing guessing games. They would toss sticks, stones, or colored rocks. The players would guess how the objects would land. Children learned useful skills through play. Boys would learn how to use real canoes by playing with small ones. Girls would learn how to take care of the family by playing with dolls.

15: Traditions To celebrate events the Northwest Indians would have a potlatch. It would take months to prepare the food and gifts for the potlatch. They would have the potlatches to celebrate weddings, birthdays, and other events. The leader would gives everyone gifts. the gifts were a sign of the chiefs power.
