Touring AZ with Nancy & Esther - Page Text Content

BC: This marks the end of another great trip. Can't wait till next time!

FC: Touring AZ with Ong & Swen | April 4-8,2007

Since I moved to AZ in Aug '06, Ong & Swen have been my first visitors! :) They flew from Cali to visit me over Easter weekend. It was really nice being around people who know me - being silly, stupid laughing lots! Thanks guys! | Originally we were going to the newly opened SkyWalk to see the Grand Canyon, but our plans changed a few times, & we ended up going to the Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, Grand Canyon, & Sedona. We came back in time for Good Friday Service, & Bruce did a photoshoot. They almost missed their flight due to I-10 closing down to 1 lane, but thankfully they made it onto the plane!

Ong & Swen on the plane. Destination: Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport

Welcome to Phoenix! Views on the road driving from the airport back to Chandler. I met them at the airport, and we rented a Chevy Cobalt. Bright little yellow car. You'll see it later :) Swen was following me in rush hour traffic. I almost ran out of gas!

Here's the first glimpse of our little yellow friend. Everything is manual, so the power is in ur hands. As you can see, Swen is trying very hard to stretch her little arm to unlock the passenger door. The ETD was 4:30am, but we really didn't leave the house until around 5. We stopped by at Fry's Marketplace to pick up some snacks for the trip & found ourselves with many napkins (see the brown papers).

There was a lot of traffic on the 17, due to an accident and the highway closing off for a few exits. We were still doing fine on time though. Along the way, we saw hot air balloons, and a variety of landscape. Belcw is just one of many.

 Antelope Canyon Page, AZ

We arrived in Page, AZ just in time to join the Antelope Canyon Tours. It's on an Indian Reservation, so in order to do the tour you have to pay the tour fee, tax, and park fee. As we rode on the truck, there was sooo much sand flying into our faces. Thanks to Esther, she let me borrow her hat to cover my eyes.

Top Left: The truck we rode to get to the Canyon Top Right: The slit is the enterance to the Upper Canyon. All the trucks are parked outside. Bottom Left: Ong being blown by the wind.

Entrance to the Upper Canyon. Another name for the Upper Antelope Canyon is "the crack" or Slot Canyon. The Lower Canyon is "the corkscrew," but we didn't get to see it. | The patterns and colors in the canyon are created by flash floods. And they are located on the land of the Navajo Indians.

The Big Hanilini "where water runs through rocks"

Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to fashflooding and weathering. Rainwater, esp. during monsoon season runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed & sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Overtime the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors deeper, & smoothing out hard edges in such a way to form characteristic "flowing" shapes in the rock. Bottom Right: Our tour guide

Photography w/in the canyon is difficult due to the wide luminosity range made by | light reflecting off of the canyon walls. We took many pics, but only a handful came out.

Lake Powell was formed in 1963, when the Glen Canyon Dam was completed, and is also part of the Colorado River. I think we crossed the border to Utah, and we stopped to have lunch at a vista point. Good 'ol fried rice and cheetos!

At the Dam... and then off to HorseShoe Bend!

 Grand Canyon, AZ

We got to the Grand Canyon just in time for the sunset - though it wasn't the best one I've seen. We woke up the next morning for the sunrise. Boy was that early! Did a bit of the Bright Angel Hike, and then went to Sedona.

Place where we didn't stay! | Fitting 3 on a full size bed | Figuring out where to go | Waking up the next morning

Being pros at taking pics of ourselves :)

 Sedona, AZ

See snoopy in the background on his back?

Sleepy Shots Waiting for Bruce @ the car rental

Back in Phoenix | Esther sitting in Caleb's car seat

 Clubbin with my AZ friends
