6: CHOOSING YOUR NAME | Your name, Rafael, has special meaning. By now, I'm sure you know that its Jewish tradition to name after deceased loved-ones. We believe that through a name, we honor our relatives and ensure their memory lives with us forever. We also think that you might inherit some of those individuals traits. You were named after your great-grandmother on your dad's side. Her name was Riva. (We used the first letter “R”, as customary). She was a very determined, strong woman with lots of energy and perseverance. She took care of your grandfather lenya during World War II and later in life immigrated to Israel. She lived a very long life and died at the age of 95. Even now, as a 2 year old boy, I sometimes think I see her traits in you. (Even though I never knew her, but I heard a lot from your grandfather and father!) You are determined and full of energy. I hope those traits help you in life. Your Jewish name is Chaim. It means life. I chose this name because it was your great-grandfather name on my side. His Russian name was Fima. He was an amazing person. My childhood memories are full of him and your grandmother Lena. He was energetic, funny, an amazing friend, a notorious lady's man, and the center of any party. But most of all, he was an incredible husband, father, and grandfather. If it wasn't for him, I would not be who I am today. Your middle name is David. The only special significance is that I liked it. I thought it to be regal and manly. Plus, it rhymed nicely with Rafael. I know... you have lots of names! In additional to a very long last name! But we hope you enjoy all of them.

26: HOPES & DREAMS | MOMMY'S WISHES | Dear Rafunya, It is hard to express on paper my hopes and dreams for you. It will never be an all encompassing list, but I hope from these words you get a small idea of the kind of person I hope you now have become. I wish that you grow up healthy, happy, and strong. I hope that we give you the kind of childhood full of amazing memories, laughter, family and friends. I hope that you grow into a confident, intelligent, thoughtful, and determined person. But most of all I hope that you recognize and value the importance of family. Never forget where you came from and what made you who you are. Remember those who gave a big part of their lives so you (and your parents!) could have the opportunities you do now. Cherish the past and never be afraid to tackle the future. I hope that you learn to look at things as not being “difficult” but a chance to succeed and get things accomplished. Don’t be lazy in life, love or work and don’t forget those who helped you along the way. We, your parents and family, will always be there to support and love you. Oh.. and as a personal request don’t forget that mama is always right ;-) Well, if not always then most of the time.
27: DADDY'S WISHES | Dear Rafunya, I want you to know that for me you will always be my little boy does not matter how old you are and how big you will grow to be. I would love you to always be able to come talk to me with whatever it is bothering you and we will figure out how to make things all right. I know that your Mom and I will make you ambitious and make you want to always succeed in whatever it is you find interest in so I have no doubt about that. But I just want you to know that I want you to find happiness in life, in your career, and in your relationships. And I also what you to know that your Mom and I will always love you no matter what. Love, Dad. PS. Just like Mom I have the last words of wisdom: when you make a decision always remember what's really important in life and it will put things into a different perspective and make it easy for you.
