FC: The Chilean Earthquake: The plate tectonics
Physics today has the theory that Chile is a highly seismic area because of the Nazca and South American plates. They are converging at eighty millimeters a year, which is one of the fastest rates on Earth. The article explains patterns of earthquakes in Chile since 1920. Evidently, the reason why earthquakes are more deadly is because there's more people on Earth in present day.
Tsunami effects are described from the 1960 earthquake. Primarily, the relevance of plate tectonics deals with subduction. In all of the earthquakes the two main plates subducted. The Nazca went under the South American, lifting up the sea floor.
Why Do I Care? We are learning about plate tectonics in class today. Plate tectonics is not only a theory of the past but it may affect our lives today. Evidently, there have been recent, deadly earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. I wanted to know each earthquakes effects. I was curious why Haiti gets more attention than Chile. Also, I learned the process that plate tectonics control to create these shocking disasters.
Why is it important to society? It is important that society as a whole knows about the environment. After all, it does take a huge role in the development of our lives. Also, whenever there's a natural disaster people should know why. Also, this article is very helpful towards the prediction of upcoming plate movements.
