FC: 4 Jobs of a Computer

By: Skylar Grout Period 1 Technology Applications

Input | Input receives (accepts) information (data) and makes it available to the computer. The "I" of I/O (input/output).

 Examples | keyboard | mouse

Process | Process happens in the central processing unit (CPU). The CPU is where the computer does its work, where the processing takes place. On a microcomputer the CPU is one single chip. Part 1 Control unit - sends the data to the unit or arithmetic logic unit. It may be compared to a "traffic cop" directing the flow of traffic. Part 2 arithmetic logic unit (ALU) - calculates or compares the data, performs calculations and functions. The ALU is the unit that does the processing.

 Examples | CPU chips

Memory | Memory is where data is stored until needed. Two kinds of memory Part1 Random access memory (RAM) - temporary memory or volatile storage known as primary storage, stores the programs that you write, it's changeable memory, when the computer is turned off, RAM is lost. Part 2 Read only memory (ROM) - permanent memory, stores the programs that are built into the computer (like the operating system), this memory cannot be changed.

Examples | Flash Drive | RAM

Output | Output is the job (and device) that gives data back in a usable form. The "O" of I/O (input/output). The types of outputs are soft copy and hard copy (also called a printout).

 Printer | Copier | Examples
