FC: A Year Down Yonder By: Richard Peak Created By: Brionna

The main characters in this story are Mary Alice and her Grandma. Grandma Dowdel is a heavy set woman who is very spry for her age. She comes across as matter- of- fact and has little time for explaining things. Mary Alice is a 15 year old city girl. She was sent to live with her grandma when her father lost his job. She is a little shy and often surprised at her grandma's behavior.

This story take place in a hick town in 1937. The story starts during the fall right after the Great Depression and continues on for the rest of the school year. The times were still tough with people stealing and skipping school to work on the farm.

One major problem was when Mary Alice moved from Chicago to a small town with her grandma. She doesn't want to move to a new town. Another problem throughout the story is the idea of if it is ever o.k. to steal. Grandma Dowdel strongly disagrees with people stealing, yet she steals to help the less fortunate. This happened when she stole the pecans from the farmer and pumpkins from the neighbor and then made pies for the town. Both of these problems were resolved when Mary Alice came to both understand and love her grandma. This was noticed when she asked to stay at her grandma's house and years later she decided to be married at her grandmas house.

My favorite scene from the book was when Mary Alice was at school and the school found out that a tornado was coming so they were all heading to the basement to hide from the tornado. Mary Alice got outside in all the chaos and started running home to make sure her grandma was all right. Her grandma was all right and she took Mary Alice to the basement of their house. In the basement Grandma Dowdel handed Mary Alice her cats, Bootsie and April. Mary Alice didn't know she liked the cats and was surprised she had brought them in from the tornado. I liked this scene because it was when I first realized that Grandma Dowdel really cared.

If I was a new character in this book I would be Mary Alice's best friend. I would have lived next door and I would have come over every day. The outcome of the story and the way the problems were solved probably wouldn't have changed much. Mary Alice would have asked me for advice.

I would probably be in a lot of scenes like at the school and at Mary Alice's house. One scene i would probably be in is the one where she goes home during the tornado. I think this would be a fun scene to be in.
