 Annamarie's Journal

Journal Entry #1 | I am Annemarie, I am12 years old and my older sister died in a car crash. I am caring and like to help people. My best friend is Ellen. She is Jewish and that means the Nazis are after her and her family. I live in Osterbrogade. The war of Germany is taking place and Nazis are standing on every corner. I have a little sister named Kirsti and two parents.

Journal Entry #2 | Today, February 8, 2012, I am walking with Ellen from school to our houses. My sister Kirsti is following. Just now I remembered we have a track meet at our school on Friday and I want to win so I am going to ask Ellen if she will race me. “Ellen, will you race me to the corner, we have a track meet on Friday?”She said OK so were racing now. when we get to the corner, The soldiers say “halte.” Kirsti comes trotting up behind us. Then, the soldiers the soldiers ask us “why are you running?” I say “because were practicing for our race on Friday.” After a long talk, they let us go home.

Journal Entry #3 | When I got home, my mom asked us why we were home late. I told the truth and told her everything. My little sister is over exaggerating and that makes my mother worried. After that conversation, my sister asks for a pink frosted cupcake. My said that she couldn’t have one because ther is no sugar.

Journal Entry #4 | While visiting my Uncle Henrik’s house with my mother, Anna Marie, and Ellen I was told there would be a funeral for my Great-aunt Birte. I know there was never a great aunt Birte so I'm wondering why the adults are lying. I asked Uncle Henrik why he would lie. He could tell I was mad so he told me I am right but it is better not to know everything. It is night time and a casket has been brought in. People are coming in who I don’t even know. I was surprised to see Ellen's parents arrive! After a few hours of people sitting around with no conversation, the soldiers come. I am breathing hard and can’t calm down. The soldiers ask us why we haven't opened the casket. My mother thought quickly and told him that the doctor said she might still have germs from the sickness she died with. He believed it and left. I am so happy. When the soldiers leave, we open the casket with not a dead body but jackets, blankets, sweaters, etc. The things are handed out to the visitor and they look scared.

Journal Entry #5 | Later, Peter showed up and told the visitors it was time to go. I had no idea what this meant but my mother told me the visitors would stay on the boat all night and in the morning they will sail to Sweden. The visitors snuck down a dark difficult path through the woods down to Uncle Henrik’s boat in two groups. Peter took the first group and mother took the second. Before the first group left ,Peter gave an envelope to an old man and said he must give it to Henrik. The old man fell on the way towards the path but he was okay. They continued on. After a while my mother led the second group away. | continued on next page ->

I waited for many hours for my mother to return. I fell asleep and when I awoke she hadn’t come back. I was worried. I looked for her and could see something on the path and it turned out it was her. She was hurt. She fell on the way back and broke her ankle. While trying to help her I found the envelope. The old man dropped it when he fell. My mother was frantic. It was a very important envelope. I said I could take it to Uncle Henrik. She told me to put it into a basket with some food and pretend I was taking him lunch that he forgot. I ran as fast as I could down the path . I was almost there then the soldiers stopped me. I was worried that the boat would leave before I could get there. The soldiers scared me too. They ate the bread and threw away the apple. Then they found the envelope. They had the dogs smell it but the dogs didn’t care about it. The soldiers walked on and I finally got to the boat. My uncle was on deck and I couldn’t see anyone from the group. | continued on next page ->

I was worried when I didn’t see any of the visitors on his boat. But, he said everything was perfect now that I brought the envelope. Then he sent me home. Later that night, when Uncle Henrik returned home from “fishing” I asked if if he could tell me about some things that hapened. He told me a little. He explained that the people were carefully hidden in the bottom of the boat and that the handkerchief inside the envelope was necessary to keep the soldiers dogs from finding the hiding people. He told me that the handkerchief had been soaked in a special solution that scientists created to keep the dogs from being able to smell. He told me that the soldiers came but the dogs didn’t find them because they had the handkerchief. The people, including Ellen and her parents, made it safely to Sweden and he said that someday I would get to see them again. I was very happy.

Journal entry #6 | I really liked this book. There are some things I would like to ask Annemarie. When the soldiers were questioning her it was really scary. I don’t know if I couId cover up being scared like she did. I wonder how she was able to pretend the way she did. I would also ask her if she ever saw Ellen again and was able to give her the Star of David necklace. I would also like to find out if Annemarie ever returned to Uncle Henrik’s house. If I could go with her to Uncle Henrik’s, I would like to go fishing on the boat with Uncle Henrik and her. I would also like her to show me how to milk the cow.
