FC: Welcome to your AP ENGLISH IV Research Project | Let's Bring Literature to Life!

GETTING STARTED Instead of a traditional research paper, which is by the way, a requirement for graduation, we will be creating author fan pages. This means you will design a website that pays tribute to an author of your choice. So, the first step is to choose your author. This should be a writer of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry whose work you have enjoyed. If you have only read one book or piece by this author, you should be prepared to sample more of his or her work.

Have fun with with it! In much the same way I have used art to morph literature into a new form, you will use technology to turn your research into a well developed electronic tribute.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, but the questions are certainly worth thinking about. Arthur C. Clarke We will be using Weebly to create our websites. Be sure you are not blocked from this site. As a prewriting activity, you will be creating an acrostic from your author's name using the electronic template at Read, Write, Think. Simply type the following url into your browser and get started. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactives/acrostic-poems-30045.html (I will also post this in Moodle so you can cut and paste it.) Keep in mind that this tribute poem is based on your existing knowledge of your writer and his or her literature.

"It is not a bad idea to get in the habit of writing down one's thoughts; it saves one having to bother anyone else with them." Isabel Colegatte

Your HOME PAGE should be well designed and state the purpose of the page, which is to pay tribute to the author about whom you have chosen to write. You may start with a pre-designed template or from a blank page. Your website will also include a PHOTO GALLERY. This must include a minimum of 6 photos or illustrations, and you must provide citation with each photo. Another element of your website will be a CONTACT PAGE. This will allow viewers (including your instructor) to email comments to you directly. You will also need to include a BIOGRAPHY PAGE. This will Include basic information such as: where and when your author was born and perhaps died; interesting facts about your author. This page must include at least 500 words of text. Photos are welcome here , too.

"Curiosity has its own reason for existence. The important thing is not to stop questioning." Albert Einstein | The next aspect of your site will be BIBLIOGRAPHY of all works by this author: A complete list of all things written by this author.

This will be followed by your LITERARY ANALYSIS PAGE. This basically discusses the works of your author and why you chose to pay tribute to him or her. Important: Any ideas that are not your own must be attributed to their source. This page should include five examples of what critics say about your author. This is the meat of your project. Do not take shortcuts with this section.

"How do I know what I think until I see what I say?" E. M. Forster

Another element on your website will be the EXCERPTED WORKS pages. You must include a minimum of 3 excerpts, complete with citations. You should also write a few lines about why these passages are significant or representative of your author's style or subject matter. Think of this as simply offering your viewers a sip or taste of your author's writing.

This project will take about a month and you will have several deadlines posted in Moodle. One of the ways we will keep up with your progress is by creating a BLOG in your website. You will be required to post at least twice each week.

Your viewers, such as other students, will be able to post comments in your blog, too. In fact, one of the things you will be graded on is your interaction with other students by way of their blogs and contact pages. This AFFILIATION should occur at least twice each week.

The CONCLUDING ACTIVITY for this project will be to create a DIAMANTE. You will simply go to Read, Write, Think and use the online tool to create an original work that focuses on the things you have learned about your author as you built this website. I know you will enjoy this project and create something of which you will be proud. And most of all, let's HAVE SOME FUN!

You may also want to add MUSIC or VIDEO to your website. Just make sure that all content is school appropriate.
