2: Barbie is a doll manufactured by the American company Mattel. It was released to the market on March 9, 1959 at the American International Toy Fair in New York. It was created by Ruth Handler Elliot Handler's wife, co-founder of Mattel. Barbie's name was placed in honor of Ruth's daughter, Barbara. Its creation was inspired by a German doll called Bill Lilli.
