Machines can be complicated and simple. We can find them at home, at school and in the workplace. Machines are everywhere! We use machines everyday. They make life easier for us.

There are two types of machines: Simple and complex. Often times, many simple machines can make a complex machine but in this book, we are going to focus mainly on simple machines.

A simple machine is a machine that does work with only one movement.

There are six simple machines: and inclines plane, a lever, a wheel and axle, a screw, a wedge, and a pulley.

An inclined plane is a flat, sloped surface. Inclined planes let you use less force to move and object from one height to another and the longer an inclined plane is, the less force you need to move and object. An example of an inclined plane is a ramp.

A lever is any stiff rod or plank that turns around a point. This point is called a fulcrum. Some examples of levers are scissors, wheelbarrows, and baseball bats.

The third simple machine is a wheel and axle. They are made up of two round objects of different sizes that area attached so that they turn together. Some examples of wheels and axles are doorknobs, steering wheels, fans and ferris wheels.

The screw is another form of inclined plane. A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder post

Another type of simple machine is the wedge. A wedge is an inclined plane that moves. A wedge can have one or two sloping sides and often is something that cuts in to something else. Knifes and axes are wedges.

The last type of simple machine is a pulley. There are two types of pulleys and one that combines the two. The first type is a fixed pulley which changes the direction of the input force. The next is a movable pulley which multiplies the input force. The last is a movable and a fixed pulley used together. this is called a pulley system.
