FC: "Corruption was the act of selling the little silver mirror God propped up in the soul"

Throughout life, one makes decisions that can impact them for their entire life and go through physical emotional pain, sadness, love, death, failure, success, and more. According to Grandma Tilson, she had said, “corruption was the act of selling the little silver mirror God propped up in the soul,” which means corruption gets rid of the ability to look deep at your inner self and to judge what is right and what is wrong. In Linden Hills by Gloria Naylor, she well describes how corruption can, in fact, change the way one is. For example, Winston Alcott is forced to marry a woman because he wanted to keep up with his appearances and keep his career with a major law firm. Winston Alcott did not love this woman and yet, married her solely to save his reputation.

In Dante’s Inferno, specifically in the 4th circle, people were concerned with material goods where they were punished. These types of people cared about money, new cars, huge houses, clothes, shoes, and more. These people in the 4th circle were punished because all they cared about were materials in life instead of others. For example, the richer a person gets, the more money they wish and the more they push themselves away from people who really care about them.

The def jam poetry artist that was chosen is named Jill Scott. She had recited “Nothing is for Nothing” which explains that regardless of what society wants a black woman to act and live, she should always want to do what she is interested in doing and live by her interests and no one else’s.

In Canterbury Tales, “The Wife of Bath” tales, the wife displays inner beauty and youth. But, she is a dissatisfied wife whom has been married five times and repays debt with men through sex. Lust and money is what drives people to wrongful actions.

The Lady of Shallot by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, describes a woman who is isolated in a tower weaving a picture of the outside world. She looks at the world through a reflection in the mirror. She is cursed and therefore, has to be in that room. She was in love with a knight who is already taken by Guinevere. Because she knows that she can not be with Lancelot, she ultimately killed herself on a boat floating down a river. So because she was so hurt, she took it upon herself to die.

In the poem “Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes, it describes what will happen when a dream is not pursued and compares a dream deferred to a raisin in the sun. What he means is that if you let your dreams stand untouched, it dries up and becomes unhealthy.

All these poems and tales have one thing in common and is that things can make you a better or a worse person. Lust and greed can make a person so insensitive to the rest of society. Some of the poems talked about confidence and how confidence can make a big difference in changing one’s life.
