FC: My Summer Adventures | Dill
The names Charles Baker Harris Dill for short. I live in Meridian, Mississippi with my ma. Ain't got no pa. I've got blue eyes and "duckfluff" light hair. During the summers I stay with my Aunt Rachel in Maycomb. There, I met the Finches, Scout and Jem. I told 'em I can read and that I'd seen the movie Dracula. Been friends ever sinceWe spend our summers running around and making up stories. We also spy on Mr. Boo Radley. He's fascinatin'. Our favorite game s'about him. We call it The Radley's. All the summers I spent in Maycomb were the best and done taught me more than any schoolin'.
My ma's a photographer and once she entered a photo of me in a contest and we won 5 dollars. | During the summer I stay with my Aunt Rachel in Maycomb. She lives next to the Finches. | Jem and Scout Finch tell me that Boo Radley been locked in his house 15 years and that he walks | around Maycomb at night and eats sqirrels.
Thanks to all the Finchs my summers never had a dull moment. Every year as I grew older I never had a father figure or man to look up to until I met Jem and Atticus. I loved hanging out with Jem because I looked up to him and he tought me so much as did Atticus. Seeing Atticus defending Tom Robinson showed me strength and fairness to all . Atticus always welcomed me as one of his own and was very understanding when I made mistakes, like running away from home.
Her names Jean Louise Finch, but we call her Scout. Every summer I look forward to just see her beautiful face. One day she and I are gonna get married and have a family and I'm gonna be a good loving father and husband.
The summer of Tom Robinson's case taught us all a lot.The day of Tom's hearing Jem, Scout, and I say up in the balcony with the reverend and colored folk. I'll never forget how mad I was listenin' to that lawyer talk to Tom that way. The hearing also introduced me to Dolphus Raymond who helped me understand why men act the way they do, for example, he who pretends to be drinkin' liquor but is actually drinking a coke.
That day I had bet Jem that he didn't have enough courage to go all the way up to that Radley house and touch it. Ended up being one of the scariest of not only that summer, but my life to. Jem, Scout and I ended up rolling her down in the tire and she wound up in a wad on the very front steps of the Radley's Porch. She just sat there, didn't move. It shoulda been me up there she coulda die, but it coulda been me if we had argued it out right. Jem finally ran and snatched her, but before that he managed to sprint up the steps and slam his hand on that house.
This watch here my ma gave me. Said I'd always have love with me where ever I went. I bring it everywhere I go and been. It's been engraved "To Charles Baker Harris, may you always be loved, create love, and share it." My ma says its from her, but I know, somehow and somewhere, its from my Pa.
When them lawyers were questionen' Tom I got to be angry and upset. When we left the courthouse Mr. Raymond givin' me a sip of here coke really eased me and he also eased me when it came to why men are who they are.
I may not be the strongest or fastest or brave. I may not have a father in my life or a stable life, but what I do have I am thankful for. The friends and family I have made and spend time with these last summers make up who I am, not Charles Baker Harris, but Dill. What I lack in strength and bravery I make up for in my creativity and love.
I have grown older now and have changed. I will always love Jean Louise, as she has grown herself. I continue the tradition of returning every summer to continuous adventures and one day I will marry Scout and Jem will be my brother as I have always seen him. We will have a family and we will teach them of our summers and the mockingbirds.
