22: Phaethon, Son of Apollo By:Olivia Coolidge

23: Summary: Phaethon is the mortal son of the god Apollo and thinks he will some day be as great as his father. One day he comes across the mortal son of Zeus who says that he is not Apollo's son. Thinking he has been lied to he goes to the palace of Apollo to see if he is truly his son. When he reaches the palace he finds that he is Apollo's son, but needs facts to actually believe. The stubborn child will only truly believe unless he can ride on Apollo's chariot across the sky. The child wont sway so his father finally gives in and allows his child to ride the chariot. Before Phaethon takes off, his father warns him of the horse's power and to not go to high. The foolish boy did not take head to the warning and soon lost control of the chariot, he let go of the reins his father told him to hold on to so the horses wouldn't run free, and fell to his death. His mother and sisters wandered the world until they found Phaethon's scorched body and buried him. They wept so much that the gods decided to ease there suffering and turn them into poplar trees, which weep tears of amber in memory of Phaethon. Reflection: I relate to Phaethon's story the most because I will admit that I am stubborn and always want my way! I will do virtually any thing to get what I want. I also would not be able to be comforted like Phaethon's family, and rather I had died then a loved one. I am unlike this story in only the fact that I would not make such a large request to my father I just met! Over all I think that the cultural value is love. I think this because Phaethon's father loved him enough to let him ride the chariot and his mom and sisters loved him enough to look all over the world for his body when he fell from the heavens.
