FC: Quadratic Word Problems by D.J Ruggiero

Sam's local sandwich shop has 3 sandwich sizes: 3", 6", and 8". the cost of , these sandwiches are \$1.80, \$2.40, an \$3.80. Assume that cost of the sandwiches varies quadratically with its diameter. | Question #28

part 1 Define the variables, write ordered pairs, and find the equation expressing cost in terms of size

To find the equation for cost in terms of size, first press the STAT button on your calculator. Select Edit, and input the ordered pairs. Press the STAT button again. Under the Calc section select QuadReg. Input L1,L2,. Go to VARS. Under the Y-VARS section select Function, then select Y1. Press ENTER, and you have the equation. y=.1x^2-.7x+3 | X is the diameter a sandwich. Y is the cost of a sandwich. | The ordered pairs are X Y (3, 1.8) (6, 2.4) (8, 3.8)

To find the cost of a 5 inch sandwich press 2nd then graph. This shows you all the values of y for each value of x. Scroll down to 5 under the x column. The number adjacent in the y column should be \$2.00. | To find the smallest sandwich size just press 2nd and graph again. The smallest sandwich size would be 3 inches, which costs \$1.80. Once again, if you are without a calculator replace x in the equation with 3. | If you do not have a calculator replace x in the equation with 5.

The most reliable way to find the value of x for a specific value of y is to first press y=. Then under Y2 input the specific value of y. Next press 2nd then trace and select intersect. Once the graph picture loads completely, press ENTER 3 times. The x value you're looking for will be at the bottom right of the screen. | For this problem you would input 6 under Y2 ind y=. After following the other steps the x value you should find is 10 inches.

The cost- intercept is the cost of the materials it takes to make the product. Materials in this instance would be bread, meat, etc. In this case the cost intercept is \$1.80, because that is the lowest point in the parabola.

Don't walk in front of me and be my leader, don't walk behind me and be my follower, but walk beside me and be my Brother.

From the outside looking in they'd never understand, from the inside looking out we could never explain. | Greeks do it better...

BROTHERHOOD - LEARN IT, LIVE IT, LOVE IT.

Men's best friends last you only 20 years, but men's best brothers will last you for the rest of your life.

Brotherhood is not a destination, but a journey.

Don't walk in front of me and be my leader, don't walk behind me and be my follower, but walk beside me and be my Brother.

Pain is passing.. Brotherhood is everlasting!

You can take the Brothers out of the Fraternity...

...but you can't take the Brotherhood out of the Brothers.

Not four years, but for life.

Brotherhood is not letting petty differences get in the way of anything. It is about being true to yourself. It is about experiencing new adventures by entering the realm of others.
