I, Esperanza Ortega, was only 13 years old when things started to get a little awkward. I live in Aguascalientes, Mexico on El Rancho de las Rosas with my Mama, my Papa, my Abuelita, friends, and servants.I myself get waited on, like bathes, clothes, and other chores.I am very kind, but I can be selfish in times and my family is quite rich. | Journal Entry #1 | Just in a few months I had a tragedy struck my family. My Papa died suspiciously, but I think it was my Tio Luis because he asked Mama to marry him fr her intelligence .The ginormous house, part of the ranch, the roses all burnt down. Everything was lost except the porcelain doll that Papa gave me for my birthday. EWW!. After that, my Mama and I had to leave Mexico and immigrate to California, and start all over. I had to start all over without my Papa, and my Abuelita I was so confused on what to do because of how Abuelita and Papa wwere not there to guide me, but I had Mama. I need to learn many chores I never had to do in Mexico and the servants would do instead of me. The place I now live is very poor, but it’s a roof over my family and I.

Journal Entry #3 | Awakened by Mama as the house was being burnt down slowly I walked out of the house with Mama at my side and a wet rag covering my face. I couldn't find Abuelita in the house, but Mama risked her life and returned to the burning house. Luckily, they both came out of the house before it collapsed into ashes. Abuelita was hurt in her ankle and we had to sleep in our servants cabin for weeks.

Journal Entry #4 | Watching Pepe and Lupe with Irene and Melina was quite entertaining until a few hot blast of wind and a dust storm came unwelcoming. After sitting in a room, something was scratching at the door. I opened the squeak door to see Isabel’s orange ball of fur, but the kitten was more of a brown ball of fur due to the dust storm. However, none of the adults came back from the shed or fields until the gusty storm was over . Sitting on a couch was hard because I knew my family was out in the the dust storms perched on the ground for cover.

Today Mama came home and I went to go show her the savings I have got the store, but when I looked inside it was nothing. I was heartbroken. How would I get Abulelita here to see Mama? Pondering I knew who too the money, Miguel, because I only told him where the dough was. I couldn’t just ask Miguel for the money because he went to north California to find a job in the rail road. A few weeks later, we got a letter from Miguel to meet him on the bus stop. “Squeak” the doors opened and many people pored out, at last Miguel came slouching, but when he saw his parents he sprinted. I was surprised who came out of the door next... it was ABULELITA!!! He brought her from Mexico! When Mama saw Abulelita she sat right up when see was sick! | Journal Entry #5

Journal Entry #6 | Meeting Esperanza would be a time of learning because of how she learned so much when she moved. Imagining sitting there crocheting would be an exciting experience due to the experience that she went to when she moved. I would ask so many questions for instance, How hard is it to work in the sheds? Sitting there would be life experience due to the horrible things that happened to her.

Esperanza loved to be with roses.

Esperanza would crochet pieces like this.
