Entry #2 | Entry two: To make a birthday bad, something extremely horrible has to happen. And what happened to me was worse then anything that had ever tried to get to me. On the day before my birthday, my beloved dad was murdered while fixing a fence. i wish i was there with him so I wouldn’t have to suffer though this before my birthday. It’s like the world hates us. But why? Now our dreadfully awfle uncles are going to take over our once beautiful ranch! And to make worse, Tio Lois, one of our uncles, proposed to mama! my life is getting worse by the second! Oh, help me please! And now, since mama turned down Tio Luis’s proposal, he burned our house and so we live in the servants quarters. Mama decided for us to run away to California to live like pigs and work in an immigration camp!!! Once we got there, Mama got deathly sick! I think I’ll be orphaned!!
Entry #3 | Entry three: The smell of urine haunts my nose and I’ve been sitting to the point where I’m not sure I still have a butt! It has been four days straight on a moldy plaque of wood on a nasty train. I’m accompanied by Mama, Hortensia, Alfonso, and Miguel. Papa has been lay down to rest and the wounds are still painfully deep and my sadness is like being swept across the face by a wild African lion. I don’t want to carry on, and I feel like joining Papa in a new and less painful place.
Entry #4 | Entry four: Where did it go!! I franticlly search for one of the most valuable things I owned. It was enough to bring Abulita to us, and it was all gone, every last shining penny. Hortensia told me it was probably Migeul. Why did he have to be selfish and take something so valuable? He needs to return every penny! How! And then, in the fields the next day, We had a message from Migeul. What could it be?
Entry #5 | Entry Five: The most wonderful thing that could happen to a girl has happened to me. After losing my Dad and having to move away from my home in Mexico and having to work in an immigration field in California, I know good can come from a tragedy. We found out later that when we Miquel got off the train he brought abuelita to us. Mom is back from the hospital although she'll never be able to work again. But we know she's not sick. At the reunion of Momma and Abuelita there wasn't a dry eye of fifty miles in all directions. Miguel and I are dating and the work in the fields is getting livelier. As Abuelita always said "after a mountain, there's always a valley."
Entry #6 | Esperanza is like me. She is a fun-loving and out-of-control and always willing to work hard. Although I haven't gone through all the tragedies she went through, I have still conquered some of my own and if I were to meet Esperanza I would show her my struggles and triumphs. Or as her Abuelita would say "After the mountain, there's always a valley." I think I would want her to teach my Spanish and show me how reach she really was compared to the modern day. If I were to meet Esperanza I would show her the games we play and the technology we have developed. If I were to meet Esperanza I think we would learn more about each other every second we spent together.
