2: Wesley Autrey was waiting for the train with his two young daughters when the man standing next to him had a seizure. The man fell off the platform and landed on the train tracks. With the train rapidly coming, Autrey decided there was not enough time to pull him out; he then dove on top of the man pushing them both in between the tracks. The train went directly over their heads, sparing the lives of both men. | The Good Samaritan
3: Defending an unknown woman, Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax lost his life fighting a man with a knife. The man initially tried to attack a woman in the streets of Jamaica, Queens, New York. Hugo intervened and was left for dead by the attacker. | 12 year old, Colton Reep was attacked by a wild cougar while camping. The screams were so loud Marc Patterson who was camping nearby ran to his aid. Marc tried to kick the cougar but after there was no response he jumped on the cougars back choking it until it released the boys head from its jaws. He removed the boy from harm by growling at the cougar and backing away slowly.
4: ACTS OF VIGILANTISM | In Helenwood, Tennessee everyone knew that Timothy Chandler had been arrested on child pornography charges. The community knew because it was all over the TV news. Two of Chandler's neighbors decided to put justice in their own hands. Therefore, they decided to set the home and car on fire. Both neighbors were accused of trying to set the house on fire, which was accomplished. Chandler, 53, escaped from the flames but his wife was killed in an exmaple of vigilant justice. In the end both neighbors were charged with first degree murder and arson.
5: In Marshville, North Carolina an angry mob fatally beat a man whom they mistakenly though was involved in the disappearance of their friend, prior to police arresting and charged another person for the crime. The ten men were charged with murder in the attack because Tony Lorin Blakeney later died at the hospital. Authorities said they dont believe Blakeney was connected to the disappearance and death of Patrick Antwone McClendon. | In the Bronx a man on the street was ordered by a vigilante to stop beating his girlfriend. The boyfriend refuse to stop beating his girlfriend when the vigilante took out a gun and shot the boyfriend in the face when refusing. Boyfriend with the name of David Williams had 10 arrests for domestic violence. Police are hunting for the vigilante.
6: Acts of Civil Disobediance | Rosa Parks | On December 1, 1955, The police arrested Rosa at the scene and charged her with violation of Chapter 6,refusing to give up seat for a white man. What started the Montgomery Bus Boycott Movement
7: The planned construction of a Muslim community center in Lower Manhattan morphed into a controversy about Sept. 11, Islam and freedom of religion that echoed worldwide in 2010. | Three people were arrested in Orlando, Florida,on 6/11/11 for committing a most heinous crime atrocious act. Get ready for this...it's really offensive... They went out and fed the homeless. | Arrested for Feeding The Homeless | Ground Zero Mosque protest
8: Criminal Acts Commited by Professionals | Architects & Engineers attribute to portions of unethical behavior within the Construction Industry. They will do whatever is necessary to make the client (owner) like them often times at the expense of the contractor. Knowingly issuing drawings and other bid documents that are defective and deficient with the expectations that construction costs avoided. | Wal-Mart was sued for committing unethical behaviors Wal-Mart allowed 12 businesses ‘unnamed’ hired illegal immigrants for custodial services to be done inside Wal-Marts across the states. Wal-Mart, has committed criminal acts against the illegal immigration laws These illegal immigrants were working with low wages, no social security payments, not having to file taxes or any money from one’s paycheck going to federal tax or state.
9: Former Belgian Bishop Roger Vangheluwe admitts to sexually abusing two of his nephews. As his interview is being televised across the nation, Vanngheluwe shows no remorse of his actions. He claims he has no attaction to younger boys but felt he and his 18 year old nephew felt and acted on their emotional intimacy.
10: For which examples were all team members in agreement? We all felt strongly about a few of the ethical examples. We would all hope that in the example involving Marc Patterson, when a child is in needing that we would risk our lives to save him or her. We all agreed that feeding the homeless being illegal in Florida is an embarrassment of our criminal justice system. We would all fight to help fellow mankind no matter what the repercussion. | Which examples generated disagreement? The Mosque built at ground zero generated disagreement among the group. Some people in the group felt as though protesting Mosque was disrespectful to the Muslim people. Others in the group felt that building the Mosque was dishonoring those that died in the bombings of 9/11.
11: Discuss what the disagreement reflects in terms of personal value systems. The disagreement showed that some people believed that respect and politics were higher on their value system than religion and freedom. Some of the group felt that respect to the people that died this was a slap in the face. Also, that politically we are showing the United States is weak and does not stand up for what would be in the best interest of the American People. On the other hand, for people to have the freedom to practice their religion anywhere undermined the emotional baggage that went with ground zero.
12: Least Important: Inner Peace, Success, Justice | Most Important: Honesty, Love, and Loyalty
13: Compare each of the actor’s value systems with your individual and team value systems. In what way are they similar? In what way are they different? Most of our group valued honesty as their first value. The other values seemed to be very scattered. Some valued love and loyalty while others felt knowledge and justice were more important. However, our top three were the ones we all agreed were closest to the top for all of us.
