BC: "You get one life. And it's yours, and you are in charge" (136).

 Lauren Maxwell

"Choice. You do not choose what others do, William, and others do not choose for you. What they did they did. What your father did or didn't do, he did or didn't do. Their choices. You are free to go. You would think so anyway. Why can't you think so?" (116).

Will is a high school boy that lives with his grandparents. He goes to a vocational high school that is designed for kids who are in a crisis. He hates it. He struggles with the death of his parents. He doesn't listen to anyone but the voice inside his head that is constantly questioning life. He believes he is somehow responsible for the death of his parents and the suicides of four kids. Will is severely depressed and is on medication.

"My dad drove off the road... Into the water. With my stepmother" (70).

Pops and Gran have the "world's best kept garden" (146).

"Why is it you should do the shopping? Not that you mind doing the shopping, you don't, at all. It's the why. It's the why that nags. That is, it's their shopping" (13).

All he does for fun is play bocce ball with Gran and Pops. He likes to sit down by the beach too. This is his favorite place to be.

Outrageously, impossibly beautiful. Her body flows smoothly. Her sweat glitters. She smells like honey. She is right. She is perfect. Angela. Angel. My only friend.

"Why are you here? Whose table is that? Why are you in wood shop? You are meant to be a pilot. How does wood shop get you any closer to being a pilot? But you are here" (2).

Dear Diary, Why do I feel responsible for the suicides of these kids? I can't possibly be responsible... can I? But why would the couple decide to commit suicide right there, right where I buried my sculpture on the beach? Am I the carrier of death? I am afraid that I am responsible for the death of my parents and the four high school kids. I know it's all my fault.

"You're famous. You live quiet for a while till time comes then just bust out of no place. Like Jesus. And then we know everything. You are the one. we are your troops. We believe, Man... You're chosen" (118).

"You Forgot. One thing, one last thing, falls away. You were not alone. All this time. You were lonely" (146).
