FC: The Great Depression
It's been said that the great depression was caused by a number of factors. One of these factors was the Stock Market Crash in 1929. Another factor was all the bank failures. Other factors were the reduction of purchasing items, America's high tax for imports, and to a lesser degree, drought conditions.
The Great Depression lasted from 1930 to 1939. As a result of the Great Depression, there was widespread hunger, poverty, and unemployment. There was also a worldwide economic crisis. | During the Great Depression, stock prices fell 40%, 9,000 banks went out of business and 9 million savings accounts were wiped out. 86,000 businesses failed, and wages were decreased by an average of 60%. The unemployment rate went up from 9% to 25%.
15 million people were left jobless. Thousands of people were left homeless during the Great Depression and many could not afford to take care of their families. | Many children were malnourished; 25% of all schoolchildren were malnourished. In mining countries malnourished children was as high as 90%. The divorce rate rose, and the birth rate dropped.
Jobless men had to rely on their wives and children for work, and they did not like this. They were so upset that they left their families. | Women saw new opportunities, and saw their roles growing. With no other choice, they gained jobs in order to support their families. Black women actually found it easier to get jobs than their husbands.
Minorities did not benefit much from the FDR's New Deal Programs. They were always the last hired and first fired, so they were the first to suffer the Depression's effects. Most of the programs targeted unemployed white males. | Black men were either completely shut out, or had to settle for separate and lower pay scales. Job shortages in the southwest led to the illegal deportation of 400,000 Mexican-Americans so that whites could get more jobs and government relief. Native Americans received their own New Deal.
