FC: Hats Off to You, Mr. Lincoln! Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth Ms. Jacoby's Second Grade 2009

1: 2009 was a special year. We witnessed the Inauguration of the first African-American president of the U.S. It was also the Bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birthday. Our class celebrated in many ways, including making birthday cards which were sent to Springfield, Illinois. Please enjoy our cards and some facts about this wonderful president.

2: Did you know? Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Kentucky. This year, 2009, we celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth.

3: How did the U.S. Mint honor him this year? | With four brand new pennies! Each one has a different reverse (back) with a picture representing a time in Lincoln's life. Look for them in your change!

4: Did you know? Abraham Lincoln loved to read. He would travel far just to borrow a book..

5: What were some of his favorite books? | Life and Memorable Actions of George Washington, Robinson Crusoe, Pilgrim's Progress, and Aesop's Fables

6: Did you know? | Abraham Lincoln was nicknamed Honest Abe. He once walked 6 miles to return some change to a customer.

7: Honesty was one of Lincoln's qualities. What other qualities did he have? What qualities do you have? Can you name a place that is 6 miles from Arlington?

8: Did you know? | Abraham Lincoln was the first president to have a beard. It was suggested by an 11 year old girl in a letter to him.

9: It's true! Grace Bedell wrote Mr. Lincoln a letter when he was running for president. He wrote back to her. After the election, when he was taking the train to Washington, D.C., he stopped to see her along the way!

10: Did you know? Abraham Lincoln carried letters, bills, and notes in his tall stovepipe hat.

11: Do you know where you can see one of Mr. Lincoln's hats? | Next time you're in Washington, D.C., check out the Smithsonian National Museum of American History!

12: Did you know? Abraham Lincoln was the tallest president, standing at 6 feet, 4 inches.

13: While in Illinois, he was part of a group of legislators named for their height. What was the name of this group? | The Long Nine, of course :-)

14: Did you know? Abraham Lincoln was married to Mary Todd and had four sons - Robert, Edward, Willie, and Tad.

15: Which son was present at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial? | It was his oldest, Robert. He was present at the dedication on May 30, 1922.
