2: Fun Facts | He was the most well known painter of his time. Known for his religious paintings Lived in Highlands North Carolina.
4: LIfe Before Becoming a Painter | Henry Tanner spent most of his early childhood in Philadelphia. His dad made him work because he did not want him to become a painter, but henry tanner had poor health so he had to stop working.
5: At the age of twelve Henry Tanner decided that he wanted to become a painter. he started off by painting harbors and animals in the Philadelphia zoo. Then he went off to study under Thomas Eakin.
6: Educational Background | At the age of twenty one Henry enrolled into a very prestigious school called the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. There Tanner studied with a group of master professors. Before graduating the academy, he dropped out to combine business with art.
7: Influences | Henry Tanner's biggest influence in his earlier years was a master professor by the name of Thomas Eakins. Thomas had a great influence on the style in which tanner done his paintings. He also had an impact on helping Tanner in the pursuit of art itself.
8: Tanner's Painting Style | Henry's style as a young painter was more of a realism style which he obtained from his teacher Thomas Eakins. Later on in his life he switched for realism to a more looser, color oriented style.
10: Henry changed his painting styles all throughout his life. But he was most known for his religious style painting. Growing up his dad was a bishop of a church so he took after his dad by painting several religious paintings such as Daniel in the Lions Den, The Annunciation, and The Resurrection of Lazarus.
12: Contribution to History | During the time of Henry Tanner's life his main contribute was that African Americans were not allowed to paint during this time period, but that didn't stop him he kept on painting. This gave other African Americans the courage to paint and to do what they love.

15: The Banjo Lesson | The most prominent well known work of Henry's life was called "The Banjo Lesson". He created this work of art in 1893. During this time period African Americans was under the stereotype of entertainers and this was his way of getting back on society. In this painting you see a grandfather, what appears, teaching his grandson how to play the banjo.
