Homelessness is something that is happening all over the world. There are more and more people that are faced with this each day. The reason for homelessness is because of lost jobs and people not being able to make the money that they need in order to pay for somewhere to live. I think that some of the people in the world can prevent homelessness. There are many people out there that are homeless because something that has happened with their family and their family will not let them stay with them. The pictures throughout my visual essay show what homelessness looks like. There are many different people in the world that are faced with homelessness. These people include men, women, children, and people of any race and ethnicity. In the first photo of my visual essay there is a man that is holding up a sign saying “homeless”, this picture shows how hard it is for people that are homeless and all of the things that they have to go through day to day. The
second photo is a sign that says, “Homeless and hungry please help thank you and God bless”, many people that are homeless make signs like these that they stand out on street corners with in order to see if people will donate them money. There are many people over Oklahoma that stand on the street corners to get money from people. The next photo that I have is a man that is pushing a grocery cart with all of his belongings that he owns in it. I have seen people like this in Oklahoma that use a shopping cart to carry around all of their belongings. The fourth photo that I have is a man sleeping next to a building. People that are homeless normally do not have a place to sleep. There are shelters around Oklahoma but most of the time those are full of people. Once the shelters are full they cannot take any more people and therefore, people have to sleep on the streets. The next photo I have is a man sitting on a sidewalk with a sign that says, “Homeless, hungry, sick, and tired anything helps
I have no one”. This is so sad to me that there are people in the world that have no one to turn to. They do not have any family or a friend that they can rely on and that is why they are homeless. The next photo is another person with all of their stuff in a shopping cart that is sleeping on the street. The next photo is of an older gentleman that has a sign and is sitting on the side of the sidewalk. Then there is a person that is handicapped in the next photo that is homeless. It is sad to see people that cannot walk and are probably in a lot of pain but they cannot get any help because they probably do not have health insurance and they do not have a place they can go to get any help. The next two pictures are similar, they are middle aged men that are homeless and are living on the street. The last photo that I have is of a homeless child that looks so sad and so alone. A homeless person that is an adult is one thing but for there to be homeless children out there that do not even know how to
take care of their selves is just so sad. It is sad that their parents would put them in this situation where they have to live out on the street. A definition for homelessness is the state or condition of having no home (especially the state of living on the streets). I believe that homelessness is a functionalist perspective in the fact that people are going to be homeless no matter how many jobs are available out there. I feel like people these days do not try hard enough. I think that some people think that once they fail there is no turning back. They feel like they will always be homeless and there is no way that it can change. I feel differently about this though. People can make a change and just because they failed once does not mean that their lives are over. I think that people can prevent being homeless. They can search harder for a job and ask people for help before they hit rock bottom. Homelessness is something that is hard
to overcome but I believe that it can be done. There are many things that can be done in order to prevent and help with homelessness. I think there should be more jobs created out there for more people to have. I also think that there should be better education out there about homelessness. People around the world are not aware at what people deal with when it comes to being homeless. There should also be some kind of program in place that would help people that are homeless. Even if this program is for psychological counseling for the homeless I think this could be a start for them to get back on their feet. Being homeless is something that is very hard to deal with and I think that it can be a very touchy subject for some people.
